What is Ratebeer ?

Ratebeer is a community website where craft beer enthusiasts can leave beer ratings. Each beer has a score out of 100.

Style Pale Ale
Country British Beers
ABV 5.5%
Serving Temp 6 to 8 °C
Bottle Size 330ml
Take one whiff of Magic Rock's High Wire Grapefruit American-style Pale Ale and you'll wonder if they've started growing grapefruit trees in Huddersfield. Indeed, about the only thing obvious on the nose is a deliciously sweet grapefruit--more like the pink or ruby kinds. Whilst the grapefruit flavour is still very obvious it is accompanied by other flavours like lemon sweets and biscuity malts. A solid bitterness helps balance the sweetness and its carbonation and dry finish carries it on for what seems like forever. Bottom line on this beer? It does what it says on the tin (can): Grapefruit, grapefruit, grapefruit!

Product Reviews

  • A favourite of mine

    Review by Simon

I like a good fruity beer and this is one if the best. Beautiful grapefruit flavour doesn't overpower the beer, about as refreshing as ale gets! (Posted on 09/03/2018)

  • Solid pale

    Review by Luke

Punchy and full of flavour good solid pale ale the grapefruit is really foreword as it should be full on zesty beer (Posted on 20/02/2018)

  • Not a novelty beer

    Review by John

Some fruit, or otherwise flavoured, beers seem to be done for the novelty factor. Not this one. The flavours are nicely balanced, with the sharpness of the grapefruit working well with the bitterness of the hops. (Posted on 28/12/2017)

  • Very nice

    Review by Charlotte

Quite a nice drink, not to much pineapple (Posted on 26/12/2017)

  • cynical side said NO

    Review by rik

I was wrong, light refreshing and far too drinkable. (Posted on 09/12/2017)

  • Great Grapefruit!

    Review by Dudes Brews

Very smooth nice kick of grapefruit but not overly bitter from it, not quite the same edge as elvis juice flavour a bit more soft and juicy. Its a very nice beer and very easy to drink, would buy again (Posted on 02/12/2017)

  • Not enough grapefruit

    Review by Judge

This is an ok tasting beer, but its lacking the zestyness and pithyness of the grapefruit flavour i would expect (Posted on 28/11/2017)

  • Decent Pale Ale

    Review by TonyL

Noy my fave pale ale but certainly no disgrace to the pale ale name. Worth a try. (Posted on 06/08/2017)

  • zingy

    Review by Kel

Not generally a fan of beers with fruit flavours added but grapefruit is a favourite of mine and this really hits the spot. (Posted on 28/07/2017)

  • Fruity

    Review by Rich

This isn't a pithy grapefruit IPA like Elvis Juice for example.

It's probably my favourite grapefruit IPA - have ordered it again.

Serve chilled with sunshine. (Posted on 25/07/2017)

  • Good

    Review by Bill

Nice grapefruit flavour, quite subtle, unlike others that can be over powering , really nice (Posted on 16/07/2017)

  • Refreshing

    Review by Matt

The addition of grapefruit makes for a surprisingly refreshing beer. The sharpness is at just the right level. Highly recommended! (Posted on 01/07/2017)

  • Very good

    Review by Oliver

Very good grapefruit beer, not as good as elvis juice but close, defo a trend that many are following (Posted on 29/06/2017)

  • Grapefruit twang

    Review by David

Love this fruity little can. Refreshingly zesty citrus twangs but almost too easy to drink during a warm weekend (Posted on 25/06/2017)

  • Best Grapefruit IPA

    Review by Rich

This has to be my favourite of the grapefruit IPA's.

Not overly bitter, but lots of grapefruit flavour. (Posted on 07/06/2017)

  • Bitter sweet Grapefruit beer

    Review by Daniel

As a lover of grapefruit infused IPA's this one is up there with Brewdog's Elvis Juice and Siren's Pompelmocello. Less sweet than Elvis Juice and not quite as tart as Pompelmocello, but a good balance that's very easy to drink. (Posted on 03/05/2017)

  • A great beer

    Review by Dave___

Had this a couple times now and it's right up my street hoppy and fruity, you can taste the citrus elements, A lovely beer in my opinion. (Posted on 20/04/2017)

  • Sharp

    Review by Ninja Terrier

Once again Magic Rock take beer to a new level. Nothing of the natural tartness of Grapefruit has been lost in the brewing process. Does what it says on the tin. (Posted on 17/04/2017)

  • Great Beer

    Review by ScubaBeanz

Really like this grapefruit Beer. Elvis Juice is slightly to hopped for me and this gets the balance right. Recommended (Posted on 06/04/2017)

  • Better than Elvis Juice

    Review by Brew Den

Grapefruit infused pale ale; very refreshing, a little boozy, a little sour, wonderful on the nose. Perfect for sunny days :) (Posted on 03/04/2017)

  • Tart & Tangy

    Review by MJMcG

It would be quite easy to mistake this for actual grapefruit juice at first. The delicious pale ale notes of the classic High Wire edge through, but the overriding flavour is grapefruit. It's not in the least bit subtle, but it is gloriously refreshing. (Posted on 20/03/2017)

  • Excellent grapefruit beer

    Review by UK Beer Network

Zestier and more bitter than an Elvis Juice. If you like real grapefruit flavour this is a better option. Highwire is a superb beer to support the grapefruit flavour. (Posted on 16/03/2017)

  • Like a Grapefruit Juice

    Review by Pip

Avoid if you don't like grapefruit flavour as it is clear and in your face. However if you do like it then this is an absolute must! (Posted on 07/03/2017)

  • 5*

    Review by KMH222

Think Elvis Juice will always remain my top grapefruit infused beer, but this is still top notch and can't really fault it! (Posted on 04/03/2017)

  • Not my favourite

    Review by Gregor

Not my favourite pale ale or Magic Rock Beer.

I like the occasional grapefruit flavour but I felt this was too overpowering and took away from the overall flavour of the ale.

Definitely couldnt drink more than one ! (Posted on 25/02/2017)

  • Superb!

    Review by Rich

I really enjoyed this grapefruit IPA.

Not as hoppy and bitter as something like Elvis Juice - probably my favourite beer right now, and ideal for summer! (Posted on 21/02/2017)

  • Great Session Beer

    Review by Frickley

Love Grapefruit beers and this one hits the spot with a fruity taste rather than a pithy taste. I'm a girl and tend to go for ales with a ginger or citrus taste - this is a gud un as we say up North! (Posted on 03/02/2017)

  • Refreshing

    Review by Klaud

Just the right amount of grapefruit flavour. Not too strong or overpowering. Very refreshing and I'm looking forward to having a full session on it in the Summer. (Posted on 24/01/2017)

  • Very refreshing

    Review by Klaud

Just the right amount of grapefruit flavour, not too strong or overpowering. Very refreshing and looking forward to full session on it when the Summer arrives. (Posted on 24/01/2017)

  • One of the Better Magic Rock Beers

    Review by James

If you don't like the other fruity beers, like myself, then this is slightly milder and may be more to your taste. (Posted on 23/01/2017)

  • Refreshing and drinkable.

    Review by Sam

It seems to be more common place nowadays to see fruit flavours in beers, especially in IPAs. This is a very good example of its style, and the grapefruit adds to the already fruity flavours from the hops. Overall a very refreshing and drinkable beer. (Posted on 06/01/2017)

  • Phenomenal Greatfruit

Review by Beer Today, Gone Tomorrow

You don't have to love grapefruit to love this. Tremendous tropical fruitiness gives way to a lingering hoppy bitterness that leaves you craving your next sip. Pretty good quite frankly. (Posted on 26/12/2016)

  • Grapefruit hit

    Review by Hoppy

If you like grapefruit, you'll like this beer. It's as simple as that. I've had all of the Magic Rock range and this is their best beer. (Posted on 19/12/2016)

  • Strangely great!

    Review by Green Dragon

I first tried as part of the advent calendar and wasn't sure i'd like it. It pours beautifully with an orangey colour and has a fantastically unique style. Wasn't sickly at all so have ordered again! (Posted on 16/12/2016)

  • Very tasty and refreshing!!

    Review by JerryFishBiscuits

The grapefruit flavour is slightly overpowering, but works very well with the citrusy American hops - and luckily the hoppiness prevents it from tasting too "alcopoppish". Adimttedly I bought this for my wife, not really expecting to like it myself, but it's really refreshing drink which I'll definitely buy again. (Posted on 29/11/2016)

  • Boozy grapefruit - what's not to like

    Review by Birky

Absolutely lovely. Wasn't sure at first but great mix of sweet and sour. (Posted on 11/10/2016)

  • Beer! Grapefuit!

    Review by Llamaman

    Beer! Grapefuit!
Two great things in a can. The grapefruit is a bit of a bully - this isn't the most balanced of beers - but it's very refreshing and tasty. (Posted on 28/09/2016)

  • Refreshingly different

    Review by Rick

A good refreshing beer with a good kick of grapefruit. As other reviewers have mentioned, if you are just looking for a hint of grapefruit, then this is probably not for you, but if you like a good slug of grapfruityness for a refreshing change, then this is well worth a go. Slightly less sweet than Brew Dog's Elvis Juice - so personally would go for this over BD's brew. (Posted on 18/09/2016)

  • underwhelmed

    Review by Bancini

A bit of a disappointment, this. Refreshing enough, but becomes a bit one dimensional. Could have done with more malt to even out the intense grapefruit. (Posted on 14/08/2016)

  • Prefer Elvis Juice

    Review by SimonW

This is almost too Grapefruity for me but to be fair it claims to pack the grapfruit in so it delivers. I liked it but presonally prefer Brewdog Elvis Juice. (Posted on 21/07/2016)

  • Too much Grapefruit

    Review by Hop botherer

It seems that its a fine line between complement or overpowering a beer. For me this seems to have crossed over to the latter annoyingly. (Posted on 29/06/2016)

  • Overwhelmingly (Grape) Fruity

    Review by Hop botherer

The cross over between a sour and IPA. However maybe a little too Grapefruity for me. I always feel the addition of of an ingredient should compliment not overpower and I fear it has achieved the latter. (Posted on 29/06/2016)

  • Superb

    Review by Bruce

Served at10 degrees in a IPA glass.
Lovely appearance, nice white foaming on top.

For me the grapefruit is more apparent than Elvis Juice and edges it in taste and grapefruit bite.

Will be buying again. (Posted on 28/06/2016)

  • Grapefruit, pure and simple

    Review by Sam

Huge hit of grapefruit on the nose and the same in the mouth. Lovely mild fruit flavours in the background. I really enjoyed this, would purchase again. (Posted on 27/06/2016)

  • Amazing

Review by Beer In The Bay

I drank this at a BBQ and it was the star of my recent purchase of beers from Beerhawk. Magic Rock have made a beer that is endlessly fascinating, delicious, flavoursome, smells incredible and leaves you wanting more just to check that all the previous really happened. An incredible beer you must try. (Posted on 13/06/2016)

  • Massive Flavour

    Review by Oppers

Fully recommended ale! Grapefruit smell is massive but not over powering in taste. Fantastic flavour, very well balanced! Wonderful summers day drink... Proper quoffable all day long mmmmmmm ;) (Posted on 04/06/2016)

  • Lovely but not a session beer

    Review by Ian

Massive grapefruit smell, thankfully not as strong a taste. Very refreshing and definitely would have again but wouldn't drink a lot of them in a session. Acidity just a little too overpowering (Posted on 02/06/2016)

  • Will be buying this again

    Review by Fyfie

Possible the most refreshing beer I've had to date. Grapefruit tastes extremely fresh with a natural tasting bitterness. Where Brewdog Elvis Juice tastes like Lilt (a good thing by the way) this reminds me more of those baby mixers of Grapefruit juice with the dryness of bitter lemon. (Posted on 21/05/2016)

  • Excellent

    Review by Haresy77

A fruit explosion. The malt base is brilliantly balanced with the grapefruit sharpness. Standard High Wire is good but this is taking it to another level. (Posted on 18/05/2016)

  • Lots of grapefruit

    Review by JonB

Interesting beer. Lots more grapefruit than BrewDog's Elvis Juice. I probably wouldn't drink more than 1 or 2 in a night, but well worth trying. (Posted on 06/05/2016)

  • fruit in a can

    Review by MJP

Loads of stuff going on with this, thankfully i like grapefruit which this smells and tastes like in abundance! as per the other reviews, the grapefruit is quite powerful but to be honest if i buy a beer that says grapefruit on it i want to taste grapefruit!!!! bought plenty of beers with fruits etc in the name in the past and have ended up disappointed (Posted on 04/05/2016)

  • Ok but not as good as BrewDog Elvis Juice

    Review by JohnH

This is pretty similar to BrewDog Elvis Juice except this is more a Pale Ale + Grapefruit rather than IPA + Grapefruit. Its a little more subtle than the Elvis Juice but also somehow a little less balanced almost like the Pale Ale base is not enough to pair with the added grapefruit. Doesn't quite have the same punchyness either.
Not bad but not as good as the Elvis Juice. (Posted on 04/05/2016)

  • Grapefruit juice

    Review by Ity

Too grapefruit - masking the flavour of a good IPA. Just think the balance is wrong with this one. (Posted on 14/04/2016)

  • Grapefruity - Duh

    Review by GMan

Huge grapefruit on nose, almost smells like juice. Taste follows suit, big grapefruit, grapefruit rind, slight mango but grapefruit really dominates. Sharp lingering bitterness throughout. Great beer if you like a punchy, citrussy forward pale ale. Good stuff. (Posted on 12/04/2016)

  • Bizarre / compelling

    Review by Geofff

Fascinating bitterness with strong grapefruit right upfront ... well worth a punt, one of magic rock's most interesting (Posted on 10/04/2016)

  • I don't know why I love you.. but I do

    Review by Llamaman

OK, this is a [branch of creosote] beer. It does what it says on the can.
Promises grapefruit and delivers it. In spades. On the nose, to taste, in the aftertaste. Even in memory - I could only recall the grapefruitiness (yes, it's a word. Trust me.) so good job I made a contemporaneous note.
Pretty one-dimensional then. Yet, I really quite enjoyed it. Not sure I'd drink another straightaway, but it really hit the spot when you want something sharp and refreshing. (Posted on 30/03/2016)
