Westmalle Tripel

Westmalle Tripel

The Trappist Abbey of Westmalle, near Antwerp, has been brewing beer for over 150 years and is regarded as being responsible for the increasing popularity of Trappist beers.
Style Abbey and Trappist
Country Belgian Beers
ABV 9.5%
Serving Temp 10 to 13°C
Bottle Size 330ml

The Westmalle Trappist Tripel is another world-class beer from the trappist brewery at Westmalle Abbey. A deep golden colour with a good dense head leads the way for complex flavours and aromas. Delicate aromas of spice and citrus fruits are complemented by initial flavours of spices mingling with the alcohol. These initial notes then morph into peaches, citrus, pepper and coriander, with moderate bitter finish. It's just excellent.

The Trappist Abbey of Westmalle, located in the Flemish region of Belgium, has been brewing beer for over 150 years. By producing one of only 11 Trappist beers in the world, the monastery assures their charitable endeavours and their own means of subsistence.

  • Almost a 4 but not quite.

    Review by Nick

Strong! Good flavour but with a strongly alcoholic aftertaste that could put some people off. I liked this but couldn't drink a lot of them at once. (Posted on 27/12/2017)

  • Big flavour tripel

    Review by Dudes Brews

Lots of banana, pear and acetone aroma and a crisp dry finish, slight alcohol punch at the end but not harsh. It’s good but not quite as good (for me at least) as the majority of the reviews suggest (Posted on 20/12/2017)

  • amazing

    Review by Chris

Can't wait to drink this over Christmas, great trappist. Get your chalice out (Posted on 18/12/2017)

  • Delicious tripel

    Review by Natalie

The best of all of the westmalle's in my opinion. Lovely notes of caramel and spice, really smooth and a good strength of flavour. Even better when served in the awesome Westmalle glass. (Posted on 16/12/2017)

  • An easy to drink Trippel

    Review by Reedy

A light and easy beer with complex flavours lurking. As a Trappist ale it offers no great surprises, but these beers are consistently good and this one is no exception. (Posted on 14/12/2017)

  • Good but not the best

    Review by Andrew

Highly regarded and a fine drink it is, but there are better tripels around. (Posted on 11/12/2017)

The king of tripels. One of the best Belgium beers (Posted on 10/12/2017)

  • Another great Trappist Ale

    Review by Heffwe

A rich pale but fruity tasting Belgian beer. The spicy undertones give this beer a sharp kick. It is called a Tripel so you know what to expect and one to savour late in the day. (Posted on 01/12/2017)

  • Westmalle

    Review by Arwel

Quality beer full of flavour, strong abv,but if treated with respect very rewarding (Posted on 30/11/2017)

  • Dangerously Delicious

    Review by Jonathan

Be wary of the taste vs ABV here. Easy to sink a few of these, a very enjoyable beer. Highly recommended (Posted on 27/11/2017)

  • Dangerously drinkable

    Review by Paul

This dangerously drinkable strong Belgian beer is strong and dry with a rich spicyness. Tastes of fruits such as plums and bananas come to the palate.Complex and exceptionally good. (Posted on 24/11/2017)

  • Sweetness and strength

    Review by Peter

Fantastic flavour of honey coming through with some alcohol sweetness and heat. At 9.5% it's definitely something to be sipped and savoured. Glorious. (Posted on 19/11/2017)

  • Don't underestimate this one

Great flavour and good colour but very potent ... you have been warned ... however it's smooth, tasty and best drunk at room temperature ... thank you beer hawk. (Posted on 19/08/2017)

  • Truly Divine

    Review by Danny Boy

Just remarkable. Lots of flavour in here, one of the world's best. Apparently also a good one to age, but that would be difficult to attempt. (Posted on 03/08/2017)

  • A drink to savour

    Review by Crafty

A light and flavoursome Tripel. Like all the strong Belgian beers this is one to savour like a fine wine. Strong hints of fruitiness and spiciness lurk behind this tasty beer. (Posted on 15/07/2017)

  • Excellent

    Review by shunt

A truly exceptional beer - just like the dubel from westmalle this is a brewery that knows its stuff.
A great example of the trippel style. its light and zesty yet carries enough depth of flavour to make you wanting to come back for more. (Posted on 10/07/2017)

  • Top Trappist Tripel

    Review by Beer Savvy

This beer is fantastic! so much flavour and you'd never know it was 9.5%. A must have for any beer lover! (Posted on 25/06/2017)

  • Admittedly biased lover of belgian beer loves this tripel.

    Review by Moxley

This light spicy and zesty beer will have you coming back again and again and paying the ridiculous amounts of money you will need to pay to get it on draft. Incredible and always will be given the tradition! keep brewing you monks you. (Posted on 24/06/2017)

One of my favourite beers discovered whilst on a trip to Brussels so was thrilled to see it here at Beer Hawk. Would highly recommend it. (Posted on 05/06/2017)

  • I prefer the dubbel

    Review by Changefromaten

This did not impress me as much as the Dubbel but it was great nonetheless. On the nose; preserved lemons citrus and fruit with a bitter taste with initial sweetness. (Posted on 25/04/2017)

  • Excellent Belgian brew

    Review by Ale X

A wonderful golden coloured beer with a strong distinctive flavour. There is a sharp citrus taste lurking amongst the multitude of flavours that mark this beer apart. (Posted on 29/03/2017)

  • Legendary

    Review by Bumblebee

A world class beer from a world class brewery. If you've tried it already, you don't need me to sing its praises. If you haven't, squeeze one into your basket. (Posted on 18/02/2017)

  • say no more

    Review by steve

westmalle triple doesnt need a rating. legendary. a potent potent brew (Posted on 10/02/2017)

  • Interesting flavours

    Review by Heffer

A light coloured beer with a swirling mix of tastes to test your palette. There is a sharp bitterness with hints of citrus lurking amongst other fruity tones. Like all the stronger Belgian beers, it is one to drink slowly and savour. (Posted on 27/01/2017)

  • Yum

    Review by Llamaman

Slightly sweet, slightly spicy, very strong and totally delicious. (Posted on 25/01/2017)

  • I could drink this anytime

    Review by wgardner

It's actually so well suited for either hot or cold weather, and the flavours are so complex, and change depending on the strength of the beer. (Posted on 18/01/2017)

  • Another winner from Belgium

    Review by Ale x

A very pleasant strong beer as you would expect from a Trippel. Pale coloured with a sharp slightly bitter taste and hints of citrus fruitiness. (Posted on 13/01/2017)

  • Not as excellent as their Dubbel

    Review by Shunt

I love Westmalle's Dubbel - and for me this isn't as good.
That's not to say it isn't great, but their Dubbel just feels like a more complete beer.

This Tripel is complex with the yeast adding to the uniqueness - not too sweet or bitter and definitely something to sip and take your time with. (Posted on 12/10/2016)

  • Fantastic Trappist

    Review by ChrisBaker108

Really enjoyed this. This is a fantastic beer to end a drinking session with, perhaps shared between a few people as a bottle of port would be.
Lots of flavour, a nice fizz and not too peachy/tropical as I sometimes find these. (Posted on 27/07/2016)

  • Belgian style

    Review by Beer Baron

Strong, flavoursome, fizzy and a small bottle - almost everything a Belgian beer should be. (Posted on 03/07/2016)

    Review by Sam

Absolutely delicious beer, subtle spiciness in the background generously compliments the yeasty, estery flavours of pear, peaches, banana and slight bubblegum, with a touch of citrus freshness. Dry on the finish with sweetness from the alcohol all the way down. A fantastic introduction to the triple style for myself, will be sure to keep this in in future. (Posted on 30/06/2016)

  • Good strong beer

    Review by Mark T

..but as a previous reviewer has already said, for me it is "not as good as the Dubbel"
That's not to detract too much as the Dubbel is exceptional and this blond, stronger beer still has plenty to recommend it.
A more citrus, fruity flavour which is rare in a 9.5% beer but this just about carries it off. (Posted on 23/06/2016)

  • Brilliant

    Review by Pete

A Superb beer one of my favorite Belgium beers (Posted on 27/05/2016)

  • Classic

    Review by PK

Classic strong beer which goes great with stews and red meats. Packs a punch... (Posted on 03/05/2016)

  • Not quite ticking all the boxes

    Review by BTG

One of the few Belgium Tripel's that does not quite have the smoothness and aroma of the others, possibly it may suite other palates but not mine. (Posted on 08/03/2016)

  • Wow

    Review by Snoops

Blmey, this came as a fantastic surprise. I usually prefer the darker ales but this was magnificent. Mightily strong and flavourful but so well balanced. Straight in as one of my favourites. (Posted on 06/03/2016)

  • Splendid stuff

    Review by Snoops

A truly classic example of the Trappist style. Not as dark as some, hence my 4 rather than 5 stars, but still deee, rich and complex. It's strong but then it isn't a beer to be quaffed, it is to be savored and enjoyed slowly. (Posted on 11/02/2016)

  • Heavy

    Review by Ninja Terrier

This beer kicks a big punch at 9.5% and backs it up with big flavour. This is not an everyday beer and need to be drank slowly to get the full benefit of its vast array of flavours. (Posted on 31/01/2016)

  • Spice all the way.

    Review by Madrid Andy

Beautiful with medium spiced Indian dishes. Definitely on my reorder list. (Posted on 30/12/2015)

  • Beautiful Trappists

    Review by Londonjef

I absolutely love the beers from Westmalle, and their Tripel is nothing short of excellence. Their Dubbel is fantastic as well. I always try to have their beers in supply. (Posted on 17/12/2015)

  • Not a good as the Dubbel

    Review by Seb

But still a lovely beer, for fans of a Belgian beer it's awesome (Posted on 25/11/2015)

  • My favourite Tripel

    Review by Phil Mackenzie

A really complex and delicate beer. Classically Belgian in that is not at all bitter, but it's strong as an ox. One to drink slowly and savour the delicious flavours. (Posted on 16/08/2015)

  • Strong

    Review by Will77

One of the best, very strong so watch it if you have 3 or 4, but a real gem of a beer (Posted on 28/06/2015)

  • mature taste

    Review by dodge

As I have aged I have grown to appreciate the idea of drinking a beer slowly for the pleasure of its aroma, and subtle tastes , not pints to be necked - and this is definitely one to be appreciated. Lovely (Posted on 20/06/2015)

  • Great beer

    Review by Len From Leyton

    Beautiful sweet tasting strong ale.
It slides down easily but needs to be savoured slowly to appreciate. Thank you beerhawk for the trrappiste selection you stock. I am truly hooked. (Posted on 03/06/2015)

  • Sweet and strong

    Review by Markiemark

Quite sweet and an odd flavour. Not really to my liking so only 3 stars (Posted on 23/04/2015)

  • Another Favourite

    Review by McMaude

This is another beautiful Belgian Ale, still brewed by monks in one of only a handful of real 'trappist' ales in the world. Of the 10 or 11 recognised in the world, 6 of them are in Belgium.
Golden in colour and with a large frothy head (if poured properly), this beer packs a real punch without compromising on flavour. At 9.5% it's another that has a complex flavour, and is better sipped rather than quaffed to enjoy all those subtle flavours. Again, comes with it's own glass - another corker! (Posted on 12/01/2015)

  • One of my top 20 beers

    Review by Eric Rayner

No-one brews beer like the Belgians - they're pretty good at it, even if they do occasionally go off piste with all that fruit stuff. Westmalle is one of their best. It has strength and a wonderful complex sweetness from the various malts used. I prefer Maredsous, but this is definitely a great one to start a tour of Belgian beers. (Posted on 01/11/2014)

  • Delicious but potent

    Review by JSG

If you are looking for a standard easy drinking beer, then turn around and head back out the door. Westmalle Tripel is more like a sipping drink, that way you can actually start to taste all the subtle spices that exist. Tons of flavour and most certainly a unique taste. Loved it and will be back for more! (Posted on 07/10/2014)
