Schloss Hopfenkonig

Schloss Hopfenkonig

£1.99
Details
There has been commercial brewing at Eggenberg since 1681, with beer made there since at least the 1100s. Eggenberg belonged to a Benedictine monastery and can be found on the border of Salzburg and Passau; a famous Austrian brewery producing an eclectic mix of beers.
Style Lager and Hybrid Beers
Country Austrian Beers
ABV 5.10%
Serving Temp 10 to 13°C
Bottle Size 330ml

The Schloss Hopfenkonig is an attractively bitter German-style pils from Austria. Traditionally the Austrians shied away from copying their German counterparts but in modern times, it’s easy to be influenced by this great German style.

After an extensive lagering period of 12 weeks, we’re left with a lightly golden Hopfenkonig Pils that is very easy to drink. The Saaz hops give a moderately spicy character and solid bitterness that is a great complement to the soft malty sweetness. Smooth and light, this is a truly excellent beer.

  • Average Lager

    Review by Slack Babbath

It's an OK lager but nothing more. Their is a nice bitterness and it's clearly better than the mass produced lager, however its just not exciting enough to be remarkable. (Posted on 22/03/2017)

  • Good

light and refreshing but lacks flavour. I've had better lager style beers. Not a terrible beer, but easily forgettable. (Posted on 20/02/2017)

  • Move along please...

    Review by Llamaman

    ...Nothing to see here.

I'll readily admit I'm not usually a pilsner fellow, but gave this a go to see if I could be convinced.
It has a lot going for it - it lacks the (excessive, in my opinion) carbonation typical of the style and has a nice malty sweetness balanced by spicy hops.
But it's all very muted and I found it to be a bit bland to be honest. (Posted on 21/04/2016)

    Review by Richard

A very easy to drink, smooth and light beer, but certainly doesn\'t lack taste and, at 5.10%, a bit of punch.

    Review by Delaney

  • Superb, made me think twice

    Review by Thomas

The Eggendorf Hoppenkonig is not a beer I would normally have expected to enjoy. I tried it amongst other German be press in a spirit of adventure, being normally a dark beer fan. From the first sip I realised this was a beer of character. It is a spicy tasty and malty light beer. It has to be tried to be believed. A truly excellent beer. The best of the Pilsner style. (Posted on 29/09/2014)
