La Chouffe

La Chouffe

Style Pale Ale
Country Belgian Beers
ABV 8%
Serving Temp 8 °C
Bottle Size 330ml
La Chouffe has a quintessentially Belgian character, with spiced, bready notes, coriander and a touch of lemon. Hazy gold and unfiltered, its light refreshing nature masks a robust 8% ABV. Brasserie d'Achouffe is named after the Chouffe gnomes rumoured to live in the Ardennes mountains. According to legend, the magical gnomes ran their own brewery in the hills for many years until disaster struck and the brewery was destroyed. The story goes that one of these little brewers visited the founders of Brasserie d'Achouffe and gave them the recipe for the beer which would henceforth be known as La Chouffe. You've heard of home brew, but have you ever tried gnome brew?! La Chouffe won a Silver Medal at the World Beer Awards 2016 in the category Belgium - Belgian Style Tripel.

Product Reviews

  • A fun beer

    Review by Paul

This is a pleasant little beer. Golden, with an unfiltered hazyness, it has pleasant citrus tones and is very drinkable. But be careful as it packs a deceptive 8% punch! Recommended. (Posted on 29/11/2017)

  • Refreshing

    Review by Matthew

Easy to drink, with a refreshing taste that almost comes across as perfumey, reminded me almost of the perfume aftertaste of Parma violet sweets for want of better explanation, (Posted on 21/11/2017)

  • Tasty!

    Review by Beer Baron

Not a bad Belgian style beer. Fizzy, relatively strong and a decent flavour. Quite wheat, without being cloudy. (Posted on 01/09/2017)

  • Ordinary

    Review by JaneandIan

Compared with other beers this doesn't have the depth of flavour. (Posted on 11/08/2017)

  • Beautiful Belgian

    Review by Beer Savvy

Quite simply a beautiful Belgian beer! (Posted on 14/07/2017)

  • Premier League

    Review by Bantam

This is a Belgian strong pale ale from the highest division. Full bodied but still not a very heavy taste. This is one of my wifes most popular beers. So she doesn't know how many I am going to buy next time. Excellent! (Posted on 04/07/2017)

  • A satisfying tipple

    Review by John

I like Belgian triples, this one is a little sweeter than I'm used to.
But none the less enjoyable. (Posted on 26/06/2017)

  • Lovely beer

    Review by Gerry

A floral, hoppy aroma. A light maltyness and lovely sweetness. A warmth from the 8% alcohol, but certainly not a burn. It's lovely. (Posted on 15/06/2017)

  • Hot summer evenings

    Review by Ali

Enjoy this chilled on a summers evening and you wont be disappointed. Fizzy and floral, a crisp beer that goes down smoothly. (Posted on 09/06/2017)

  • Gnome more

    Review by baz_the_barn

this is an acquired taste, very carbonated but the head did not last and a bit too spicy - not a fan (Posted on 15/05/2017)

  • Great taste, night as night

    Review by RossW

Recently tried this as a beer tasting session. A Perfect beer for the summer! night and light, great introduction to Belgium beers. An almost perfect sized bottle for beach/summer BBQ drinking!

  • Just brilliant. No more to be said!

    Review by Ramsfan

Excellent beer, lovely taste not bitter at all. Eminently quaffable. Be careful it bites you if you drink too much. It's worth the headache though. (Posted on 10/04/2017)

  • Golden and lively

    Review by Twedds

Golden clear body and fruity citrusy smell. Sweet taste with nice floral tone hint of alcohol. Medium body with lively carbonation. Good stuff. (Posted on 30/03/2017)

  • Gnome alone

    Review by Leedj1

Very good, easy to drink despite strength, would definitely order again. (Posted on 28/12/2016)

  • One of my favourite blondes.

    Review by JL

This beer has a very smooth and distinctive taste that is an excellent choice when out enjoying the sunshine. Be careful though, it is a very easy to drink and the long tasty finish will leave you wanting more. One of my favourites. (Posted on 30/08/2016)

  • Classic

    Review by Bancini

Refreshing Belgian blonde with dry and spicy flavours, strong without tasting too alcoholic. (Posted on 16/08/2016)

  • A deceptive sessionable taste hides its strength

    Review by Coppi

I was lucky to first drink this beer in La Alpujarra region in Spain, it was a refreshing ale after a long days walk. (Posted on 02/08/2016)

  • First belgian strong pale ale

    Review by Sam

The first thing that hit me on the nose was a subtle pepper, spicy smell followed by esters, yeast, banana and clove. The taste was a rich, almost creamy esque with notes of spice, corriander, pepper, malt, bread, mild hop and fruit, with some background citrus. Deceptively easy to drink, for me this would be a late night sipper infant of the TV instead of a refreshing summer beer. Unique and excellent. (Posted on 23/06/2016)

  • Chouffe-ing lovely!

Review by Beer In The Bay

Wasn't expecting to like this at all (ordered it for my mate who was visiting) but how wrong i was. Blonde in colour, with a taste all of its own, and a slight sweetness. Really drinkable so beware the strength! (Posted on 13/06/2016)

  • Classic Belgian Beer

    Review by Kaz

One of the staple Belgian beers and one of their best as well. Quite strong, but not in a bad way, this blonde beer always goes down a treat. You can get a lovely glass to go with it as well! (Posted on 14/05/2016)

  • Zesty tones, undeniable Belgian confidence

    Review by Coops

Doesn't quite match the very best Belgians in my opinion, but is a quality act nonetheless. Refreshingly zesty mixed with a confident rich hoppy character. Sediment backs this up! (Posted on 14/03/2016)

  • Spicy stalwart of Belgium

    Review by BTG

I always make sure there are plenty of La Chouffe along with the Duvel in the fridge, both a must to fall back on. (Posted on 08/03/2016)

  • Great beer

    Review by Laura

One of my favourite Belgian beers perfect for a warm day! (Posted on 05/01/2016)

  • The Taste of Summer

    Review by Shawn

There's nothing better on a warm summer day. Light and refreshing without being too sweet or give the impression that you're drinking anything other than a fine Belgium beer. (Posted on 02/06/2015)

  • I just love this beer

    Review by AlexB

It's got that lovely Belgian blonde taste with no bitterness at all, very smooth, dangerous stuff! (Posted on 27/04/2015)

  • Nice strong beer

    Review by Markiemark

This has rather a nice wheat beer flavour with citrus and some cloudiness. It is clearly strong and a bit sweet but not nasty sweet like some strong beers. I recommend you try it (Posted on 04/04/2015)

  • A real treat !!

    Review by Stivvy

My two sons and I where knocked out with its distinctive flavour, probably the best Belgian beer I have tasted !! (Posted on 03/04/2015)

  • fantastic introduction to Belgium

    Review by Timmark

A great introduction to Belgian beers, deceptively easy drinking. Light hoppy flavours but with the unmistakable Belgian finish, simply a must try. (Posted on 08/03/2015)

  • Give a gnome a home!

    Review by Stephen

I love La Chouffe beers - this is a standard one of their range. Their winter dark beers can be very Christmas pudding and they have some nice Sol summer offerings that are lighter and slightly more sessionable. This is an 8%er and so needs some discipline but is very moreish. (Posted on 13/02/2015)

  • Belgium in a bottle

    Review by Alex

I bought this after drinking it in Belgium - it seemed to be a staple in all the bars we went to over there. Drinking it again brought back good memories! A lovely refreshing beer drank on it's own or with some grub (mmm Belgian fries!) (Posted on 25/01/2015)

  • A lovely light and moreish beer

    Review by Quitekate

A fabulous classic Belgian beer that I keep coming back to and never tire of. No sip tastes the same but each is wonderful. (Posted on 07/01/2015)

  • good quality easy going typical Belgian taste

    Review by Dave

This is a good quality place to start if you have never had a Belgian Beer before. It has a typical Belgian tasty finish. (Posted on 01/01/2015)
