Not quite a fruit beer, not quite a Belgian dubbel ale, the Kasteel Rouge is a blend of two products: Kasteel Donker 11 and a cherry liqueur made from special sour cherries. Flavours and aromas of dark red fruits and spritzy cherries are accompanied by a light carbonated texture. Sweet and tart, the Kasteel Rouge is great with food or as an aperitif.

  • Goes down easy

    Review by Piston Cap

A rich red beer. The cherry taste is unmistakable, but the beer beneath is a flavoursome dubbel. (Posted on 17/03/2018)

  • Cherry

    Great cherry Belgian brew.
Great any time of year. Rich and indulgent (Posted on 14/03/2018)

  • My favourite

    Review by Tom

My favourite beer. Nice and strong and although it is brewed with cherry it is more of an ale than a fruit beer. The fruit flavour isnt overpowering and its incredibly easy to drink (Posted on 09/03/2018)

  • Solid

    Review by Blaine

Solid fruit beer, not the best but certainly great tasting and not too over bearing (Posted on 07/03/2018)

  • Fruity

    Review by Neil

I should have known from Rouge that this was fruity. I'm not keen on fruit beers. This is a cherry one, true to form, a bit sour, dark and malty. Not my thing (Posted on 06/03/2018)

  • Great alternative

    Review by Baton Rouge

A dark Belgian dubbel style beer with unmistakable cherry flavours. An unusual blend but makes a nice change on occasions. (Posted on 21/02/2018)

  • Ticks the boxes

    Review by Thinktank

If you fancy a fruit beer but don't like the idea of moving away from a standard beer, then this should fit the bill. The cherry taste is unmistakable but behind that still lurks a dark malty ale. (Posted on 09/02/2018)

  • A good alternative

    Review by Pluto

Whilst not a fan of Belgian fruit beers, other than ice cold on a hot day, this dark coloured beer with background cherry flavours and hints of spice is a great one to savour like fine wine. (Posted on 05/02/2018)

  • Takes you by surprise!

    Review by Steve

With no mention of cherries on the label, the intense sour cherry sweetness comes as a surprise... quite nice after the initial surprise. Awesome if you like cherries... (Posted on 04/02/2018)

  • Cherry

    Review by Don Luidzi

Dark ruby beer with small thin pink head. Aroma is cherry, sour fruits. Taste is sweet cherry, malts and little sour feel. Medium body. Nice warming cherry tasting fruit beer. (Posted on 25/01/2018)

  • Mmmmm.....

    Review by Jon

I first came across this beer in France after I noticed its dark red colour calling out to me from on someone else's table it looked like it tasted nice and it does. I now only drink this whenever I go to France or Belgium. I could happily drink it all day. (Posted on 19/01/2018)

  • A surprisingly good beer

    Review by Spinoza

Not being a particular fan of Belgian fruit beers, I approached this with some trepidation. However the cherry background taste to this dark complex beer was a pleasant surprise. (Posted on 11/01/2018)

  • lovely beer... from someone who doesn't like beer!

    Review by holly

I'm not the biggest beer lover but my husband was gifted this beer and as soon as he opened it and said it "tasted like something I'd drink" I just had to try it and I ended up drinking the whole bottle! and about to purchase more! (Posted on 04/01/2018)

  • Delicious fruity but not fruit beer

    Review by Alex

The cherry liqueur flavour is unmistakable but this dark strong beer is much more than a fruit beer. If you enjoy a touch of fruitiness behind a full flavoured Belgian ale then this is for you and highly recommended. (Posted on 03/01/2018)

  • An old favourite

    Review by Elmar

One of the best Belgian cherry flavour strong brown beers, great for catching up with friends and absolutely delicious to drink. Offers the spectacular, sweet flavours of Kasteel Donker with an intriguing and moreish cherry twist. Recommend pairing with bitter dark chocolate, an intense chocolate fudge brownie or chocolate fondant, Also lovely with some rich, gamy meat like venison, wild pigeon or duck. (Posted on 03/01/2018)

    Review by Carl

Found this great beer by accident when it was part of a bundle of Belgian style beers. Now I am a big fan and ordr some each time I buy from Beer Hawk. A lovely fruity flavour and a rich aftertaste from it's 8% ABV. Try it you will love it. (Posted on 21/12/2017)

  • A pleasant fruity beer

    Review by Reedy

The cherry taste is unmistakable in both the colour and flavour of this beer. Like a Belgian fruit beer but with a strong enough taste to satisfy most beer drinkers. (Posted on 14/12/2017)

  • Aniseed

    Review by Arwel

Really not a fan of this sweet cherry aniseed flavour, but others might be (Posted on 30/11/2017)

  • Great Cherry flavours

    Review by Andy

A Sour cherry flavoured beer, with a lingering sweetness aftertaste. Far to easy to drink too much, doesn't taste like an 8% beer. Regularly drink it in local bar at almost twice the price. (Posted on 30/11/2017)

  • Decent Fruit Beer

    Review by EJ

Though a decent, all-round fruit beer, the balance was off; too sweet and cloying. Other beers at the same price range offer a more refreshing drink, yet still one to try if you're looking for a cherry beer which doesn't taste as strong as it is. (Posted on 26/11/2017)

  • Reasonable Beer

    Review by Keith

This was a strong beer which you couldn’t really tell whilst drinking it, it had a good fruity taste, quite highly carbonated not sure I’ll have this again I much prefer Leffe Ruby. (Posted on 19/11/2017)

  • Kasteel Rouge

Very sweet which takes away from the flavour of the beer but all in all fairly enjoyable. (Posted on 06/09/2017)

  • Beautiful

    Review by pathud

Tried it on draft before and this is my first purchase after looking for it on the Internet for 2 months. Could not find it in any place in London so made the jump to Beer Hawk. Sweet cherry beer with some sour undertones. Had 3 in the sun in one afternoon and ended up taking a nap (I had not notice the 8%). Thank you Beer Hawk and thank you Kasteel Brewery even more. (Posted on 09/08/2017)

    Review by Pudn

Cherries! If you like cherries, you're going to love this. A beautifully smooth cherry fruit beer. (Posted on 25/07/2017)

  • Sweet and strong beer

    Review by Ryans

A fruity tasting beer with a very obvious cherry taste. The sharp fruit flavour complements the dark Belgian brew but tends to mask the 8% strength. Very enjoyable and easy to drink. (Posted on 24/07/2017)

  • Nice, dark and fruity

    Review by Jo

Dark red colour (Ribena?) sour cherry, marzipan and caramel aroma, medium, chewy mouthfeel, sour cherry, chocolate, very slightly malty flavour, sweet and slightly sour aftertaste, lingering. (Posted on 10/07/2017)

  • Fruit beaut

  • Very pleasant

    Review by Gerry

A sweet, fruity aroma. Sour cherry flavour, with a hint of malt in the background and lingering sweetness.Certainly doesn't taste like an 8% beer. Very nice. (Posted on 15/06/2017)

  • A powerful cherry experience

    Review by dad of jon

Now available in a bar in Swansea but for £6 a bottle! Get 2 for 1 at Beerhawk. Seriously this is a must try for cherry fans, but beware at 8% it packs a punch if you're not used to proper Belgian beers. it's my goto cherry beer but not a proper kriek more like a kriek on steroids.

Rich and luxurious best describe this beer. An end of the evening treat instead of a dessert! If this is a bit too potent for you try the bacchus kriek instead. (Posted on 06/04/2017)

  • Well, that was, er, interesting

    Review by Franz

A VERY unusual taste, so unusual it's taken me some time to decide whether I actually liked it or not! Cherry and marzipan flavours abound and can be a little overbearing with its sour aftertaste - but definitely leaves you wanting more! And it was great to finally drink it from its official (and very grand) glass. (Posted on 16/02/2017)

What the ....! That wasn't what I was expecting! 1st dabble into fruit beer, and wow, what a hit! At 1st I was like, no not for me, but after I'de got over the initial shock I really started to enjoy it! Tastes of cherry and dr pepper with a sour tang! (Posted on 27/12/2016)

    Review by Good Head

Like my favourite cherry flavoured sweet in alcohol form. (Posted on 09/12/2016)

  • A little sweet and chemically for me

    Review by Jerry FishBiscuits

I ordered this one in search of a sour cherry beer which is not overpoweringly sweet.

I was disappointed to receive Kasteel Blond instead. But BeerHawk were very apologetic and sent me some free tokens which was great. I drank the Blond but found it too sweet for my tastes.

So onto the Rouge... I subsequently drank a bottle of it in a local Belgian bar, and while it's not as candy-like as the more mass-market ones, I'm afraid it was still too sweet for me. Very intense hit of syrupy cherry liquer, treacly and sticky rather than tart and sour. Could easily drink it with dessert or cake. Not terrible, but not really what I was hoping for.

    (Posted on 30/11/2016)

  • Lots of sour cherry

    Review by Jo

Clear dark red colour, little carbonation, very thin light pink head with little retention, sour cherry, marzipan and caramel aroma, medium chewy mouthfeel with little carbonation, sour cherry, chocolate and very slightly malty flavour, sweet and slightly sour lingering aftertaste, very nice. (Posted on 29/11/2016)

    Review by Shunt

The cherry smell smacks you in the nose when you bring this up to sip.
Its smooth and the cherry's sweetness is beautifully balanced with the sourness which follows.

    Review by BJ 53

A truly excellent cherry flavored beer, with absolutely the right balance of flavours. Not sweet and cloying as many are and one that you could easily drink a few of and not feel overwhelmed. (Posted on 22/03/2016)

  • A slightly different fruit beer

    Review by Donk

Sweet, but not quite as much as Kasteel Donker; fruity but not cloying and only slightly sour. 8% but you'd never know. Another Kasteel beer that I honestly don't think I could drink all night, but one is superb. (Posted on 22/03/2016)

  • A fruity joy!

    Review by Kent Hatter

From pouring this dark red beauty into my glass, to savouring the very last drop of the sweet cherry flavour, it was a triumph throughout! As cherry flavoured Belgian beers go, this is a King amongst men. Thoroughly recommended :) (Posted on 22/12/2015)

  • Yum

    Review by Llamaman

Drinks much easier than the 8% ABV might lead you to suspect. Quite light in body, with a delicious cherry flavour. A very slight sourness - I'd like a little more, but that's personal taste so by no means a fault. Those with a sweet tooth would probably enjoy this.
Better than most fruit beers, so definitely on my reorder list. (Posted on 25/08/2015)

  • Not my cup of tea

    Review by Cresp

    Review by Beer Novice

You can almost drink the essense that pours into your noise when you take the bottle top off this.

I'm a recent convert to the fruity/sour types but I can't get enough.

A must try for those who like cherries or those who don't generally like beer!

Fantastic service again Beerhawk. (Posted on 17/04/2015)

  • The ultimate cherry beer

    Review by interzen

First, be aware that this is not a 'traditional' kriek rather it's Kasteel Donker which has been matured with sour cherries for around 6 months.

The net result is something that smells like it ought to have an octane rating rather than an ABV, but tastes absolutely divine - somehow, they've managed to balance the flavours of the 'base' beer and the cherries absolutely perfectly.

If you like cherries in your beer, or even if you like fruit beers in general, you owe it to yourself to try this. (Posted on 01/02/2015)

  • The King of Fruit Beers

    Review by Curryman

I have always been fond of Belgian fruit beers after tasting my first Framboise, but had never expected to taste anything as wonderful as this King of Fruit Beers. I first came across it in a bar in Yorkshire and looked high and low for it until discovering Beerhawk. Although quite expensive, the taste is worth every penny and at 8% ABV, one is enough. Try replacing your glass of wine with a Kasteel Rouge, you'll be surprised how it compliments a lot of food. (Posted on 31/08/2014)

  • I am now a fruit beer convert.

    Review by Anthony

I bought a mixed case of fruit beers for my girlfriend at Christmas, I thought I'd try one..... Wow what a stunning beer, I wish I had bought a case of Kasteel Rouge instead of a mixed case, it's light, fruity ever so slightly sour and light tasting. I was very suprised to see how strong it is, you'd never guess . (Posted on 02/03/2014)

  • A fantatic beer that appeals to all - male or female

    Review by Daniellebabette

I will be honest, I don't like beer. However, after visiting Bruges and finding a small backstreet ale house, I decided to try a Kasteel Rouge. The addition of fruit sealed the deal for me and the artistic glass it came in made it all the more appealing. It was gorgeous! Smooth, silky and refreshing - I was converted - and I don't like beer!
I dare you to try this fabulous beauty and not be blown away. (Posted on 18/02/2014)
