Kasteel Rouge

£2.99

55
Style Fruit Beers
Country Belgian Beers
ABV 8.00%
Serving Temp 12 to 15°C
Bottle Size 330ml

Not quite a fruit beer, not quite a Belgian dubbel ale, the Kasteel Rouge is a blend of two products: Kasteel Donker 11 and a cherry liqueur made from special sour cherries. Flavours and aromas of dark red fruits and spritzy cherries are accompanied by a light carbonated texture. Sweet and tart, the Kasteel Rouge is great with food or as an aperitif.

  1. Beautiful
    Review by pathud

Tried it on draft before and this is my first purchase after looking for it on the Internet for 2 months. Could not find it in any place in London so made the jump to Beer Hawk. Sweet cherry beer with some sour undertones. Had 3 in the sun in one afternoon and ended up taking a nap (I had not notice the 8%). Thank you Beer Hawk and thank you Kasteel Brewery even more. (Posted on 09/08/2017)

  3. Life is just a bowl of....
    Review by Pudn

Cherries! If you like cherries, you're going to love this. A beautifully smooth cherry fruit beer. (Posted on 25/07/2017)

  4. Sweet and strong beer
    Review by Ryans

A fruity tasting beer with a very obvious cherry taste. The sharp fruit flavour complements the dark Belgian brew but tends to mask the 8% strength. Very enjoyable and easy to drink. (Posted on 24/07/2017)

  5. Nice, dark and fruity
    Review by Jo

Dark red colour (Ribena?) sour cherry, marzipan and caramel aroma, medium, chewy mouthfeel, sour cherry, chocolate, very slightly malty flavour, sweet and slightly sour aftertaste, lingering. (Posted on 10/07/2017)

  6. Fruit beaut
    Review by Luke

This was a nice surprise what a fruit beer packed with sour cherry I could drink this al night (Posted on 27/06/2017)

  7. Very pleasant
    Review by Gerry

A sweet, fruity aroma. Sour cherry flavour, with a hint of malt in the background and lingering sweetness.Certainly doesn't taste like an 8% beer. Very nice. (Posted on 15/06/2017)

  8. Cheery flavours
    Review by Paulk

Beautiful beer to round off the evening! Rich cherry flavours, but as others have said, a strong beer! (Posted on 01/05/2017)

FRUITY and Delicious!!!! great beer but not one you could sit and drink all day :) (Posted on 28/04/2017)

  10. A powerful cherry experience
    Review by dad of jon

Now available in a bar in Swansea but for £6 a bottle! Get 2 for 1 at Beerhawk. Seriously this is a must try for cherry fans, but beware at 8% it packs a punch if you're not used to proper Belgian beers. it's my goto cherry beer but not a proper kriek more like a kriek on steroids.

Rich and luxurious best describe this beer. An end of the evening treat instead of a dessert! If this is a bit too potent for you try the bacchus kriek instead. (Posted on 06/04/2017)

  11. Phwoar!
    Review by Dick Flassidy

Phwoar! (picks jaw up from floor). phenomenal beer, smooth and delicious. (Posted on 26/03/2017)

  12. cherry baby
    Review by garygph

Good looking almost beige-red head on top. Deep red cloudy colour. Smells nice. Tastes nice. (Posted on 16/03/2017)

  13. Well, that was, er, interesting
    Review by Franz

A VERY unusual taste, so unusual it's taken me some time to decide whether I actually liked it or not! Cherry and marzipan flavours abound and can be a little overbearing with its sour aftertaste - but definitely leaves you wanting more! And it was great to finally drink it from its official (and very grand) glass. (Posted on 16/02/2017)

  14. i like
    Review by christof

Delicious cherry base, get the sour tones and definitely worth spaces in my beer fridge. Going to try the donkers 11 due to enjoyment so far of kasteel (Posted on 04/01/2017)

  15. Hold the boat!
    Review by TurboRay

What the ....! That wasn't what I was expecting! 1st dabble into fruit beer, and wow, what a hit! At 1st I was like, no not for me, but after I'de got over the initial shock I really started to enjoy it! Tastes of cherry and dr pepper with a sour tang! (Posted on 27/12/2016)

  16. Wow wow wow
    Review by Tam

This is lime drinking cherry juice! Goes down so well. (Posted on 13/12/2016)

  17. Sweet
    Review by Good Head

Like my favourite cherry flavoured sweet in alcohol form. (Posted on 09/12/2016)

  18. A little sweet and chemically for me
    Review by Jerry FishBiscuits

I ordered this one in search of a sour cherry beer which is not overpoweringly sweet.

I was disappointed to receive Kasteel Blond instead. But BeerHawk were very apologetic and sent me some free tokens which was great. I drank the Blond but found it too sweet for my tastes.

So onto the Rouge... I subsequently drank a bottle of it in a local Belgian bar, and while it's not as candy-like as the more mass-market ones, I'm afraid it was still too sweet for me. Very intense hit of syrupy cherry liquer, treacly and sticky rather than tart and sour. Could easily drink it with dessert or cake. Not terrible, but not really what I was hoping for.

  19. Lots of sour cherry
    Review by Jo

Clear dark red colour, little carbonation, very thin light pink head with little retention, sour cherry, marzipan and caramel aroma, medium chewy mouthfeel with little carbonation, sour cherry, chocolate and very slightly malty flavour, sweet and slightly sour lingering aftertaste, very nice. (Posted on 29/11/2016)

  20. A drink for the ladies
    Review by Middy

Too sweet for me, very fruity though. This is a drink that would suit women who don't normally drink proper beers. (Posted on 28/11/2016)

  21. Good stuff
    Review by Llamaman

A quality fruit beer. Loads of fruit flavour without being clotingly sweet, and a slight tartness. (Posted on 22/11/2016)

  22. Amazing
    Review by Chris & rRog

Lots of cherry flavour lovely and strong. My favourite Belgian fruit beer. (Posted on 08/11/2016)

  23. Strong, Sweet Cherry and Sour Flavour
    Review by Shunt

The cherry smell smacks you in the nose when you bring this up to sip.
Its smooth and the cherry's sweetness is beautifully balanced with the sourness which follows.
A very easy drink for something that's 8% (Posted on 12/10/2016)

  28. Fresh and fruity
    Review by Good head

A dark red in colour and a really good cherry smell and taste. Tastes of dark cherries and is well carbonated. A very good sipping beer. (Posted on 25/06/2016)

  29. Enjoyable
    Review by Blind_Drunk

Bloody lovely beer this. I think I will be sticking a few more Kasteel in my box next time (Posted on 29/03/2016)

  30. Fruitilicious!
    Review by BJ 53

A truly excellent cherry flavored beer, with absolutely the right balance of flavours. Not sweet and cloying as many are and one that you could easily drink a few of and not feel overwhelmed. (Posted on 22/03/2016)

  31. A slightly different fruit beer
    Review by Donk

Sweet, but not quite as much as Kasteel Donker; fruity but not cloying and only slightly sour. 8% but you'd never know. Another Kasteel beer that I honestly don't think I could drink all night, but one is superb. (Posted on 22/03/2016)

  32. Fruity
    Review by Blind_Drunk

I do love a good fruit beer and this is definitely one of those. Brings back good memories of this time last year being in Belgium (Posted on 22/03/2016)

  35. A fruity joy!
    Review by Kent Hatter

From pouring this dark red beauty into my glass, to savouring the very last drop of the sweet cherry flavour, it was a triumph throughout! As cherry flavoured Belgian beers go, this is a King amongst men. Thoroughly recommended :) (Posted on 22/12/2015)

  36. Legit sour
    Review by P

Really different, wouldn't have too many as the flavour is to be tasted sparingly. (Posted on 22/11/2015)

  37. Very tasty beer
    Review by Alan

This beer tastes great, and has amazing color, very very dark red, almost black. Strong, but refreshing and light at the same time! (Posted on 01/11/2015)

  38. Yum
    Review by Llamaman

Drinks much easier than the 8% ABV might lead you to suspect. Quite light in body, with a delicious cherry flavour. A very slight sourness - I'd like a little more, but that's personal taste so by no means a fault. Those with a sweet tooth would probably enjoy this.
Better than most fruit beers, so definitely on my reorder list. (Posted on 25/08/2015)

  39. Not my cup of tea
    Review by Cresp

This is the first fruit beer I've tasted and unfortunately it didn't leave a good impression. It is far too sweet I think it would have much better if it was a little sour too. (Posted on 30/07/2015)

  40. Cheery
    Review by 101proof

A nice fruitful delight. I didn't expect the cherry flavour to be as strong and well balanced as it was. Not my favourite fruit beer but near the top of the pile (Posted on 26/07/2015)

  41. Cherry heaven
    Review by Jughead

A must for all cherry lovers (Posted on 13/06/2015)

  42. The only fruit beer for me
    Review by Beer Novice

You can almost drink the essense that pours into your noise when you take the bottle top off this.

I'm a recent convert to the fruity/sour types but I can't get enough.

A must try for those who like cherries or those who don't generally like beer!

Fantastic service again Beerhawk. (Posted on 17/04/2015)

Fantastic beer, lovely cherry taste and a kind of almost dry finish. (Posted on 27/02/2015)

  46. The ultimate cherry beer
    Review by interzen

First, be aware that this is not a 'traditional' kriek rather it's Kasteel Donker which has been matured with sour cherries for around 6 months.

The net result is something that smells like it ought to have an octane rating rather than an ABV, but tastes absolutely divine - somehow, they've managed to balance the flavours of the 'base' beer and the cherries absolutely perfectly.

If you like cherries in your beer, or even if you like fruit beers in general, you owe it to yourself to try this. (Posted on 01/02/2015)

  47. Xmas gift went down well!
    Review by Beerhawk Keith

As a gift to my daughters partner it couldn't have gone down better. He now wants to know where to get some more.
Needless to say the novel stand and glass was certainly a talking point at Christmas time. (Posted on 17/01/2015)

I first came across this beer at the Belgium beer cafe in Ramsgate. Loved it that much I wanted some for christmas. It's a great ale with a fantastic deep cherry flavour, very easy to drink. The strength is surprising as this is a very smooth drink to enjoy. You must try it. (Posted on 01/01/2015)

  52. The King of Fruit Beers
    Review by Curryman

I have always been fond of Belgian fruit beers after tasting my first Framboise, but had never expected to taste anything as wonderful as this King of Fruit Beers. I first came across it in a bar in Yorkshire and looked high and low for it until discovering Beerhawk. Although quite expensive, the taste is worth every penny and at 8% ABV, one is enough. Try replacing your glass of wine with a Kasteel Rouge, you'll be surprised how it compliments a lot of food. (Posted on 31/08/2014)

  53. I am now a fruit beer convert.
    Review by Anthony

I bought a mixed case of fruit beers for my girlfriend at Christmas, I thought I'd try one..... Wow what a stunning beer, I wish I had bought a case of Kasteel Rouge instead of a mixed case, it's light, fruity ever so slightly sour and light tasting. I was very suprised to see how strong it is, you'd never guess . (Posted on 02/03/2014)

  54. A fantatic beer that appeals to all - male or female
    Review by Daniellebabette

I will be honest, I don't like beer. However, after visiting Bruges and finding a small backstreet ale house, I decided to try a Kasteel Rouge. The addition of fruit sealed the deal for me and the artistic glass it came in made it all the more appealing. It was gorgeous! Smooth, silky and refreshing - I was converted - and I don't like beer!
I dare you to try this fabulous beauty and not be blown away. (Posted on 18/02/2014)

  55. Very rich full flavoured fruit drink with a kick
    Review by jollyjacquie

i first tried the rouge at the inglemunster brewery itself ;being a long time fan of their castell donker ,i thought i,d try it . i found it to be a very rich full flavoured fruit drink with plenty of kick.....in my opinion far superior to the lindemans kriek etc.... (Posted on 01/12/2012)
