Oktoberfest/Märzen Beer

The German Märzen (which means "March") beers are brewed in the spring as the last brew of the season--using up the previous autumn's hops--as it was too warm to do so in the summer. This gorgeous German beer is then ready for the Harvest come late-September. The most famous Märzen is the Oktoberfest, but can only be called that if it is made in Munich. No matter what it's called, it's traditionally a malt-balanced beer with toasty notes. While there is a balanced bitterness it definitely leans towards the malt and the hops characteristics are not noticeable. Modern versions of this German lager style are starting to become paler and lighter but are traditionally a beautiful deep amber colour.
