The great thing about these styles is just how accessible they are; the American Amber and Red ales are essentially just a bigger version of a good session beer. They're perfect food partners and are very easy drinking but not so much that they're uninteresting. Generally these amber or red-coloured beers are plenty malty with notes of caramel or even toffee. As is typical of American beer, hops play an important role by providing some good balancing bitterness. Yet you won't find these beers carrying a whole lot of hop aromas or flavours, just some subtle notes in there to keep it compelling.
