Founded in the marvellously-named German state of Schleswig-Holstein, Flensburger Brauerei was founded in 1888 by 5 citizens of Flensburg. Today, it’s still mostly owned by two of the founding families which is unusual for a country-wide operating brewery. Flensburger make traditional Pilsener, Dunkel and Weisen style beers, as well as seasonal and non-alcoholic brews.
Their swing-top bottles are instantly recognisable and have long been the brewery’s trademark - fiercely independent, they stuck to this more expensive style whilst everyone else switched to bottle caps. Flensburger still use their very own water well, supplied by a vein of Ice Age meltwater coming all the way from Scandinavia. This gives their beers a unique freshness that quite simply can’t be replicated.
