Introduced in 1975, Anchor Brewing's Old Foghorn is inspired by the old English barleywines--with a twist! Distinctly American, this is one of the great classics of Anchor Brewing: a dark burgundy American barleywine that is full of complexity. Aromas of toffee, dark fruits, plums, dates, Christmas cake are mirrored in its dessert-like flavours of caramel, sweet brown sugar, boozy dark fruits, almonds, and cherry coke. Its full mouthfeel with a long malty finish is balanced by a hint of bitterness. This is a great one!
Before "craft beer" was cool, Anchor Brewing was doing it their way. Surviving Prohibition, bankruptcy, and a founder getting run over by a streetcar, Anchor Brewing has played a significant role in San Francisco's and America's beer history. To this day, each brew is made from an all-malt mash in their beautiful copper brew house.
Forerunners of America’s craft beer revolution in the 1970’s and 80’s, Anchor is America’s first and oldest craft brewery, with roots dating back to the California gold rush. Entwined with the history of San Francisco, they produce their beer in a traditional copper brewhouse, where ancient techniques are combined with state of the art technology.
Combining all-malt mash and whole-cone hops, Anchor beer ferments in the cool San Francisco air - giving off the steam that gave us the name Anchor Steam Beer. Their Liberty Ale was the original brew that started off the craft beer revolution - not a bad claim to fame!
