Williams Bros. March of the Penguins

William Bros started off as a home brew shop in Glasgow and were ticking along quite happily until 1988 when one day a lady wandered in with a recipe. The recipe was in Gaelic for leann fraoch (heather ale) and had been handed down through the generations, but she didn't know how to brew it.  The two got together and after a period of experimentation the first William Bros beer was born!

Style Stout
Country British Beers
ABV 4.9%
Serving Temp 10 to 13°C
Bottle Size 500ml
Coffee, dark chocolate and liquorice flavours are joined by zesty orange peel in this rich, warming stout from Williams Bros. Brewed with oats and wheat in addition to dark roasted malts, March of the Penguins is smooth and creamy with a dry, slightly bitter finish.

  • Leave it for the penguins

    Review by Marit

Thin oatmeal stout lacking in just about everything it claims to be. no roasted malts, coffee or licorice - bit of orange at the end. Very disappointing. (Posted on 19/12/2017)

  • Average stout

    Review by James

Good roasty flavour initially but its over too quickly. And i found it to be thinner than most stouts. For me that's a negative but others may prefer it that way. (Posted on 29/08/2017)

Decent stout, nice and creamy, chocolatey, it's lacking something though. More chocolate would improve it. (Posted on 13/08/2017)

I would reiterate previous reviews that there is nothing wrong with this stout. It just doesn't stand out from the crowd.... Bit like penguins I suppose. (Posted on 26/04/2017)

  • Not bad...!

    Review by Beebo

Nice and creamy stout. Good taste. Not spectacular. Very solid though. I’d rather drink this than Guinness any day. (Posted on 02/04/2017)

  • A very good stout.

    Review by JP

Nice dark colour, good flavour. All around good stout. Nice notes of chocolate and coffee, not sure if the liquorice was there, but in my opinion that is a good thing. (Posted on 19/03/2017)

  • Take my money

    Review by Snozz

Pours black. Lacing of dark tan head. Lots of cocoa aroma. Smells almost like a chocolate orange. There’s a lot of malt there. Medium body. Mineral finish. (Posted on 16/02/2017)

  • Fantastic Session Stout

    Review by dmukgr

An excellently smooth and creamy stout with just the right amount of depth to make a session out of them without it becoming overpowering. (Posted on 09/01/2017)

  • Session stout

Not the best Stout I've had, but drinkable and has enough flavours to keep you drinking. (Posted on 18/11/2016)

  • A good beer

    Review by Paul

Creamy, coffee and dark chocolate, well balanced, not a powerful stout and easy to drink (Posted on 11/10/2016)

  • Nice but ordinary

    Review by Ed

This is a very ordinary stout - no better than guinness, didn't get any creaminess as billed (more like Guinness original) - there are much better stouts out there (Posted on 01/09/2016)

  • Lovely smooth stout

    Review by ChrisBaker108

Easy to drink with some fantastic dark flavours. (Posted on 29/07/2016)

  • Decent stout

    Review by Jo

Coffee and chocolate aroma, not much flavour to it but still had a nice smooth, creamy mouthfeel. (Posted on 29/06/2016)

  • Pick up this penguin

    Review by Good head

Really creamy and smooth. Black in colour with a slight head. Very easy drinking with a silky feel and typically stout type flavours of coffee and chocolate. (Posted on 25/06/2016)

  • Penguins like fish!

    Review by Llamaman

"Penguins like fish!" is what my penguin-obsessed two year old likes to shout at me.
This beer tastes neither of penguin (I assume, I've never eaten one) or fish, which is a welcome relief.
It's a rather mild stout (if you know what I mean) - it's quite light in body with a gentle chocolate and coffee flavour. A session stout, if you will. (Posted on 31/05/2016)

  • Light but complex

    Review by Geofff

Subtly balanced and light, kinda a strong coffee mild vibe going on here ... one of Williams Bros' standouts (Posted on 12/04/2016)

  • Above average

    Review by Llamaman

A pretty decent stout. Smooth and creamy with hints of chocolate and roasted malt, but I felt the flavour was lacking a little. (Posted on 20/03/2016)

  • Creamy Stouty Goodness

    Review by berkfromtrapdoor

If you want a session creamy stout with chocolatey flavours, then this is the one for you. Nothing unusual or 'quirky', but why go exotic, when you can get the basics this good? Settle yourself down with the Godfather Trilogy and drink the night away with ease! (Posted on 06/03/2016)

  • Good name good beer

    Review by Ninja Terrier

I brought this because of the name and my increasing liking of stouts. I was not dissapointed. It delivers all you would expect from a good stout Chocolate, Coffee and Liquorice and at a low ABV. (Posted on 04/03/2016)

  • Creamy???? I don't think so!

    Review by Ed

Firstly, I'm not a big stout fan. However, I have drunk a lot of guinness draft which is definitely creamy, and have also drunk guinness original which is not. This to me tastes more or less exactly like guiness original. I;s OK but definitely NOT creamy, and really nothing special. (Posted on 25/02/2016)

  • High standard stout.

    Review by S.Stanbridge

This stout is incredibly smooth and easy drinking. Wonderful mixture of aromas and packed with flavour. Right balance of strength and flavour. Good value too. Would recommend. (Posted on 22/02/2016)

  • Tastes just like it's title

    Review by Irv

Creamy and smooth, dark stout for easy drinking (Posted on 30/11/2015)

  • stout penguin

    Review by redders

Decent stout hints of coffee ad roastiness from the much acclaimed william bros (Posted on 13/08/2015)

  • No penguins were harmed to write this review

    Review by interzen

If you're looking for a brain-damage inducing Imperial then this isn't the drink for you. On the other hand, if you're after a flavourful, smooth and easy-drinking stout then this one will have you covered.

Pours dark, as you'd expect, although what little head is formed doesn't really stick around too long. It's got the full gamut of roasted malts in the nose, too, with maybe the merest hint of hop. Not much, but some.

Plenty of coffee, chocolate and malt flavours and a feel that's more porter than stout but even so, this one is a keeper and definitely a cut above a certain black and white Irish beverage.

There's more to Scottish beer than Tennants - this is the proof. (Posted on 10/08/2015)

  • Does not taste of Penguin

    Review by 101proof

Smooth and creamy but missing the penguin flavour (Posted on 20/06/2015)

  • Good value

    Review by BitZimBobs

Well brewed beer with great taste. Smooth, thick and creamy. Good value amongst the stouts. Notthe best stout there - certainly a good stout though, I'd order it again (Posted on 09/06/2015)

  • Proper beer

    Review by Nick D

I am very fond of penguins but I d'ont care how far they have to walk to get this stuff make them go more often.
One of my favorites. (Posted on 01/06/2015)

  • Stout with the complexity of a porter

    Review by gatoruk

Really good offering from Williams Bros. A good stout but with warm chocolate undertones putting it out there with the porters. Not too heavy IBU is just right as is ABV (Posted on 27/02/2015)

  • On the mark

    Review by AdyG

Although this stout doesn't hit the top notes like their Midnight Sun porter, this is still a welcome brew from Williams Bros. Complex coffee and chocolate flavours make this a good stout... (Posted on 12/01/2015)

  • Great value

    Review by Miles

A very dark beer, even for a stout! The low carbonation made it very easy to drink. Coffee and chocolate flavours throughout. Admittedly, not an outstanding stout, however, at this price it represents brilliant value. (Posted on 02/01/2015)

  • very easy to drink
