Williams Bros. Kelpie

Williams Bros. Kelpie

3.2

Historically Scottish coastal alehouses brewed with malted barley that was grown in beds of seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour. The brewers at Williams Bros. reproduced this by adding fresh seaweed to the mash tun! There is an evident briny seaweed characteristic alongside rich roasted malt and chocolate notes in this smooth dark ale.

Williams Brothers started off as a homebrew shop in Glasgow until a day in 1988 when a lady wandered in with a recipe for an ancient Scottish heather ale. After several trials the famous "Fraoch," and thus Williams Brothers--the brewery--was born. Initially focussing on historic Scottish ales, Alloa-based Williams Bros. has grown to 25 recipes including some fantastic limited editions and collaborations.

Williams Bros started off as a home brew shop in Glasgow and were ticking along quite happily until 1988 when one day a lady wandered in with a recipe. The recipe was in Gaelic for leann fraoch (heather ale) and had been handed down through the generations, but she didn't know how to brew it.  The two got together and after a period of experimentation the first Williams Bros beer was born!

  1. Passable Review by The Other One
    Rating

A nice, smooth dark beer but unremarkable. Slight salt tang but needs either more seaweed or more hops to work as a standalone beer. Would probably be great with food. (Posted on 22/03/2016)

  2. A tad disappointing Review by Llamaman
    Rating

Very smooth, but a bit thin in both body and flavour, and the saltiness was too subtle for me.
    More seaweed! (Posted on 21/03/2016)

  3. We need more seaweed! Review by Llamaman
    Rating

Very smooth, with hints of chocolate, but body is a little thin and flavour quite subtle. I struggled to detect the seaweed influence, which was disappointing. (Posted on 21/03/2016)

  4. Distinctively similar Review by Good head
    Rating

Very nice taste that reminded me a bit of an oyster stout. Was a lot more drinkable than I thought it would be going from some of the reviews. Has a good dark colour with a good flavour. (Posted on 27/02/2016)

  5. Interesting. Review by Katy Skywalker

Black beer. Chocolatey aroma with a slight hint of the seaside! The flavour is lighter than the colour and aroma suggest. Malty, roasted flavour with a hint of chocolate and a slightly bitter finish. (Posted on 09/12/2015)

  6. Pours like a porter... Review by Edward

Swap out for one of your porters, this is a tasty & refreshing beer that might lack a little body but washes down a cheese & crackers session a treat!! Pair with a creamy stilton or strong hard cheese. Yum. (Posted on 30/05/2015)

  7. Too subtle Review by aaron_biffy

A bit of a watery stout with a hint of iodine. Could have been decent if a bit braver (Posted on 11/05/2015)

  8. good beer couldn't taste seaweed Review by jonnolondon

Maybe it was too subtle for me, still a good beer, very good, but i couldn't taste any seaweed? (Posted on 10/05/2015)

  9. Fishy? Review by Ady Gray
    Rating

There's actually nothing fishy about this beer at all. Historically, the barley was grown in saltwater. Adding seaweed to the mash does give a hint of salt but it's great of Williams Bros to keep these traditional ales alive... (Posted on 01/03/2015)

  10. Hmmm... not sure about this one. Review by Ay Pee Horne

Decently refreshing beer, but I'm not convinced about this seaweed. Am I the only one that picks up a bit of salt in the flavour? (Posted on 06/02/2015)

  11. Strong flavoured Review by JIM

Surprisingly refreshing for such a "black" beer. (Posted on 16/11/2012)

In terms of service and speed of delivery Beer Hawk performed well but in terms of the beer selection, it is not for me. I bought two cases, one was a selection of Scottish beers and the other a mixed case of Great British beers, thirty bottles all told. Unfortunately most of them where produced by brewers who are over infatuated with new world hops, not so much a beer but more like grapefruit juice. I do not dislike citrus hops but I like the recipes to be balanced and in the majority of cases they were not. Thinking that I was just unlucky, I had another look through the British beer list this morning, a disappointing selection, so I will not be re-ordering.
Absolutely fantastic service, great range of beers (that are hard to find in the UK) and rapid delivery! We would 100% confidently recommend Beer Hawk to anyone. We've never had a problem with the service, items are well packaged and each time we have ordered our items have arrived in two days... which is nice! Keep up the great work Team BH because we love it!
Awesome quick delivery and the guys and girls that run the place have a great sense of humor!
