Details

A Wee heavy is a traditional Scottish beer, big on malts, a bit sweet and high in alcohol – it’s designed for a brisk Highland evening. This version, Don’t Worry Bee Heavy, from the brilliant Weird Beard Brewery, weighs in at 7.8% and on the nose, the honey sweetness comes through, but it is on the palate that really surprises. There’s a light, smoky peatiness to it that adds a dryness, but the sweetness is also balanced out nicely by some citrusy hops. Its depth comes from the use of 13 different grains (13!!) including a peated malt. Far from being a cloying, malty ale, its clever use of smokiness and hops lift it markedly.

Brewery Info

Some of the country's best breweries have emerged out of the homebrew scene, and Weird Beard are probably the best example. Gregg Irwin and Bryan Spooner (big beards), made the hugely successful transition to a commercial brewery after winning award after award for their home brewed beers. They launched Weird Beard in 2012, and have since made hundreds of marvellous beers… none boring. As they write: “We love upfront, in-your-face, hop-focused beers, along with classic styles. Proudly experimental and happily non-conformist.” Cheers to that

Alongside the core beers – Little Things That Kill, Mariana Trench, Five O’Clock Shadow, Black Perle – we’ll always be picking up those specials that catch our eye. Pig Smasher anyone?

This is one of the most complex beers I have tasted but is also delicious. Honey sweetness, slight smokiness, crazy complex malt bill none of it overpowering.

Velvety smooth in feel and dark in appearance. This tastes similar to a peat malt whisky with the smoky sweet flavour. Absolutely gorgeous!

Perhaps a little sweet for some though an excellent beer a little different from the norm.
A smoky masterpiece!

This is a beast of beer, a great wee heavy with a strong smoke overtone that all but smothers the honey notes. Just wish that had actually been able to use cigar tobacco in this, as they lament on the bottle notes :(
Great winter warmer

Pours a clear dark amber with thin beige head. Big, rich malt driven aromas - roasted malts, slight smokiness and peat flavour, caramel, honey and strong alcohols. Taste is rich, almost chewy sweetness; a combination of caramel, honey, molasses, dark berry fruits and chocolate backed by smokiness and peat flavours. A really enjoyable beer, full bodied, rich and full on malt flavours but not cloying. Great Christmas beer.
Not sure.

I really like the flavour but the sweetness is a little too much. Great depth of flavour and not too hoppy.
