Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel – that’s dark yeast-white beer to English speakers – is a creamy and full-bodied wheat beer from the world’s oldest continuously operating brewery, celebrating its one thousandth birthday in 2040. It may be “dark” compared to its other wheaty brethren but you’ll find no roast or bitterness here; expect malt loaf and banana bread – or even a spiced bun.

No Brainer Dunkel Weiss
Review by
Outside of what can be sourced in Germany, this is probably the best example of a Dunkel Weiss you can get in the UK. It's got more of a bitter bite than most Weiss, malty, plenty of banana/clove, touch of molasses and in my opinion is all the better for slightly less carbonation. Weihenstephaner are an old and wonderful outfit and I recommend this to anyone who enjoys Weiss but has yet to go to the Dunkel Side...

Medium-brown colour, cloudy, strong carbonation
Medium off-white head, lingering
Sweet cooked banana and brown sugar aroma
Medium, slightly watery yet creamy mouthfeel with some carbonation
Banana, brown sugar, slightly spicy and bready flavour
Banana and clove aftertaste, slightly lingering, little carbonation
A cracker.

One of my favourites, if not my favourite, dark wheat beer. Sweet and malty, with the unmistakable aroma of banana that you would expect from a wheat beer. You can't go wrong with this one.
