Jule Maelk is just outrageous. Everything about it screams, once a year Christmas treat or if you’re a sucker for Imp Stouts, this evil Santa brew will put hairs on your chest and fire in your belly! It doesn’t so much pour, but gently falls over the glass like double cream. The smell is brandy soaked Christmas cake, booze, booze and more booze. To taste, deceptively complex, subtle and artfully layered (like a cake? No, that’s not right), you’re hit first with an avalanche of roastiness, which mingles stupendously with the (extremely) sweet base, bitterness to rival the sweet follows and then comes the brandy, dried fruits and booze. This is Christmas in a glass; all you need is a fire and awkward family games! It’s a 15% ‘super tanker’ of an Imperial Stout from To Øl. ‘Nuff said.
After several years of brewing beer in their kitchen and selling it to their friends, Tore Gynther and Tobias Emil Jensen founded To Øl in 2010. Their first beer was a collaboration with Mikkeller and, with such an auspicious start, they were always going to do well.
