To Øl were high school students of Mikkeller and started brewing using the schools kitchen after bemoaning the state of Danish beer "most Danish breweries [scramble] to describe how their beers had been brewed for over 100 years...as if a stale lager ever has become less nauseous by the fact that it has been brewed for over 100 years!"  They brew outstanding, uncompromising, contemporary beer and are mighty proud to be gypsy brewers.

Chocolate, liquorice and brown sugar notes contrast with pine and citrus hops in this American-inspired black IPA. Brewed with lactose for a creamy body and slight sweet tang, Black Maria is fresh and sharp while maintaining a robust roasty character.

Brewery Info

After several years of brewing beer in their kitchen and selling it to their friends, Tore Gynther and Tobias Emil Jensen founded To Øl in 2010. Their first beer was a collaboration with Mikkeller and, with such an auspicious start, they were always going to do well.

Coupled with their relentless pursuit of big flavours and perfectly balanced beers, they have garnered a well-deserved reputation for innovation and technical skill. Using ingredients not always associated with beer and, with a particular penchant for using fruit wherever they can, you’re always guaranteed a unique, flavourful and boundary-pushing drinking experience.

This ale has an interesting taste to it. It has a sharp bitterness that slowly fades into a floral flavour. I was not expecting to taste slight hints of what can only be described as rose in the back of my mouth, as it doesn't mention anything of the sort in the description.

It's definitely not as creamy as some oat and lactose brewed ales I have tried. In fact, it was more crisp than creamy. It suggests chocolate, liquorice and brown sugar notes, but I only really tasted the hops with a slight licorice hint. A little deflated, but it was definitely not unpleasant to drink. I just didn't find it fit it's own description all that well.

My first example of the black IPA trend and it has never been bettered since!
Definitely worth a try.

Dark beige creamy head stayed well on a near black, thick, still body.
Nutty, iron aroma with chocolate & faint hints of citrus.
Medium body. Creamy, sharp, tingly - this has a bit of a bite to it.
To the fore there's malt, chocolate, nutty & cream. This quickly dissipates over the tongue to very tangy back of bitter citrus, grapefruit, pine & an overall general tangy aft.
Complex tasting beer.
Job well done

This is just how I like black IPA. Piney, floral hop aroma, smooth on the mouthfeel. Dry, lasting bitter aftertaste for the mass of hops that must have gone into this. A real pleasure to drink (albeit rather too quickly).
Delicious balance

This is a lovely black IPA, just the right mix of smoothness, powerful hops, and rich flavour. A little too easy to drink, given the %
IBU off the scale

Thought it would be more challenging at 132 IBU, but smooth and rich which balances the bitterness.
You need to try this!

If you're already a fan of black IPA then this is a must. If you're new to the style then it's still a must!

Looks dark, almost stout-like, when poured but is surprisingly and very pleasantly light in terms of mouthfeel. For me it ticks all the boxes of what a black IPA should be. Dark and malty but retaining a distinct hoppy IPA character!
