Thornbridge Brewery have released a small batch run of their brand new beer Necessary Evil, a lovingly crafted imperial stout aged for 8 months in bourbon barrels. Aromas of sweet bourbon, vanilla and oak from the ageing process combine with rich chocolate, roasted malts and caramel from the base beer. Soft and silky, Necessary Evil has layers of complexity and flavour unlike any other.

Brewery Info

A forerunner of the British craft beer movement, Thornbridge Brewery was started in the grounds of the eponymous Thornbridge Hall in the heart of the Peak District. Aiming to make a range of cask beers with a modern twist, they’ve won over 350 national and international awards - pretty good going for what started out as a tiny 10-barrell brewery.

A couple of interesting facts for you - the co-founder of Brewdog actually started out at Thornbridge back in the day, helping to create Thornbridge’s flagship IPA Jaipur, and in 2014 Thornbridge won “Best Drinks Producer” in the BBC Good Food Awards….beating Brewdog to the top spot. Although they’re seen as a more traditional brewer, Thornbridge also has a good mix of ‘new’ creations making them a firm favourite with us.

Ever had a Bourbon Barrel-aged Stout before? Then you've had this beer.

This is the most generic, stripped down and uninspired version of this beer-style I have ever tasted - so if that's what you are after then go nuts - but for £13+, you'll have to forgive me for expecting something a bit more.

Credit where it's due, it's an easier drink than you might expect for it's abv, with both the burn and the taste of the alcohol relatively well hidden.

But the bottom line is that you could spend a fraction of the price to get what is essentially this beer, but with more flavour (Founders KBS for starters).
It's certainly is!

I'm not very good at flowery, poetic language, so I wont even try. Liquid bonfire, delicious, I'll be back, so don't sell out!
Special, Very Special

A wonderful, complex and heady stout. Pricey but great for a special occasion
