Aren’t hops amazing? The addition of a single variety, in this case Citra, can lift a beer to dizzying heights. Yet it takes a skilled brewer to squeeze every last drop of flavour out of each one. Thornbridge’s Rob Lovatt (interviewed in this Beer Club Collection), has given this beer a whacking tropical aroma, with guava and ripe citrus coming through. We love it.

Brewery Info

A forerunner of the British craft beer movement, Thornbridge Brewery was started in the grounds of the eponymous Thornbridge Hall in the heart of the Peak District. Aiming to make a range of cask beers with a modern twist, they’ve won over 350 national and international awards - pretty good going for what started out as a tiny 10-barrell brewery.

A couple of interesting facts for you - the co-founder of Brewdog actually started out at Thornbridge back in the day, helping to create Thornbridge’s flagship IPA Jaipur, and in 2014 Thornbridge won “Best Drinks Producer” in the BBC Good Food Awards….beating Brewdog to the top spot. Although they’re seen as a more traditional brewer, Thornbridge also has a good mix of ‘new’ creations making them a firm favourite with us.

I generally love Thornbridge beers, but this one was slightly on the underwhelming side. I realise it’s a single hopped affair so was never going to have the full flavour and aroma I associate with the best of thornbridge, but it was still a little ‘thin’. Wen down easily, was smooth and refreshing, but I didn’t get the full Citrus affect, certainly not in comparison to say rooater’s baby faced assassin.

Single hop Citra beers can go one of two ways: a bit one dimensional, or absolutely spot on. Fortunately, Thornbridge have nailed this one. I find that some of their beers can feel a little on the thin side sometimes, not enough body, but this is not one of those. It's up there with the better Citra beers for sure.

Wowzers, this is very nice! Trademark Jaipur-esque flavours and aromas but more enjoyable than Chiron. Tastes fresher and less sweet.
