Brewery Info

A forerunner of the British craft beer movement, Thornbridge Brewery was started in the grounds of the eponymous Thornbridge Hall in the heart of the Peak District. Aiming to make a range of cask beers with a modern twist, they’ve won over 350 national and international awards - pretty good going for what started out as a tiny 10-barrell brewery.

A couple of interesting facts for you - the co-founder of Brewdog actually started out at Thornbridge back in the day, helping to create Thornbridge’s flagship IPA Jaipur, and in 2014 Thornbridge won “Best Drinks Producer” in the BBC Good Food Awards….beating Brewdog to the top spot. Although they’re seen as a more traditional brewer, Thornbridge also has a good mix of ‘new’ creations making them a firm favourite with us.

Very smooth
Review by
Beautiful porter, subtly sweet, almost like a milk stout in its smoothness with coffee and nutty flavours coming through. Another Thornbridge winner.

Black colour, strong carbonation
No head whatsoever
Coconut, vanilla, woody and malty aroma
Medium creamy, crisp, slick mouthfeel with some carbonation
Sweet, coconut, vanilla, nutty (cashew?), woody and malty flavour
Slightly bitter, malty, nutty aftertaste, slightly lingering, little carbonation
Does it work? Yes.

I wasn't sure about a coconut beer, but happily this works. Despite an aroma like a certain chocolate bar, the coconut doesn't add too much sweetness and the roasted coffee flavour acts as a counterpoint (I wonder if they toast the coconut too?).
