Sporting some serious beer pedigree, this is a beer to cherish and savour. Brewed by De Struise Brouwers in Vleteren, (which for the Belgian beer aficionados may sound familiar; chuck a West- at the front and you’ve got it!) this is an exquisite and rare treat for those lucky enough to get their hands on it. It’s a bourbon barrel aged Belgian strong ale, and weighing in at 10%, it certainly ticks the strong box. The beer itself is an education in depth and finesse, the bourbon underlaying everything but never too much, and always complementing the other flavours. It’s imbued with caramel heavy sweetness, light spices, dried-fruits (lots of prune and a little raisin) and some underlying oak. The finish is the perfect counterpoint to the start, a light acidity which completes the journey across the tastebuds.
