This isn’t quite a beer, it’s a braggot, which, for the uninitiated, is a beer/mead hybrid (malt mixed with mead and then fermented). This was a very old, peculiar and generally forgotten style, until Siren dug their claws into it. Citrus is the main complement to the outrageous mead sweetness and the accompanying sourness is the perfect counterpoint. To make it even more special, Siren brewed this iteration of Uncle Zester with bourbon barrel aged honey, giving this beer a light boozy tinge, which at 10% is to be expected! To taste, there’s lots of sweetness, underlaid by lemon, honey, a little lime and some candied sweets. It’s decadent but a surprisingly good accompaniment to spicy food. Looking for a slice of sweet leftfield, Uncle Zester is about as leftfield as you can get!
Siren Craft Brew don’t do boring. Even among the core range, usually reserved for the more ‘commercial’ beers, includes a 6% breakfast stout, a red IPA and Calypso, a Berliner-style sour beer. (What a wonderful beery world we live in). But this is a brewery that doesn’t know how to stop – there’s a huge range of seasonal, experimental and collaborative beers, the best of which we’re lucky enough to stock.
Yet, underpinning the whole operation is the ethos that beer should be exciting and enjoyed in the same way as fine wines, yet balanced and drinkable. It has been a remarkable journey since founder Darron Anley started the brewery in 2012, and we can’t wait to see where it will go next.
