Sierra Nevada Torpedo

Sierra Nevada Torpedo Can

Sierra Nevada are fairly old by US craft brewery standards. Located in the Sierra Nevada mountains, they brew wild, hoppy expansive brews to an exceptionally high standard. Most people will have tried the Pale Ale, but the range goes much, much deeper than that and is well worth exploring. They also have an astonishing commitment to community and their environment - they claim the largest private solar panel farms and fuel over half their power needs from from the sun
Style IPA
Country American Beers
ABV 7.2%
Serving Temp 10 to 13°C
Bottle Size 473ml
Sierra Nevada's regular hop bomb and the first to use their dry-hopping "Hop Torpedo"--essentially a wind funnel for the fermenting beer--which imbues a huge hoppy aroma without the associated bitterness leaving a lush citrus and pine resin flavour to come through.

  • Always on point

    Review by RedRusso

Sierra Nevada always achieve consistency with their beers. This is no exception. Wonderful deep hop flavour but in contrast very drinkable, even more so in can format. Refreshing ending after every mouthful. They don't maybe push the boundaries with this but it's very good and doesn't need to change the world. A good beer from a good brewery. (Posted on 26/04/2017)

  • Mainstream but quality

    Review by Kenee

Big brewery but also a big beer. These guys know how to brew and brew well. (Posted on 25/04/2017)

  • Lethal Hops

    Review by Dick Flassidy

Another hit from Sierra Nevada, more or less their normal pale ale on steroids. everything they make is very good and priced well, this is no exception. (Posted on 26/03/2017)

  • Top hop hit

    Review by The Big Boy

This is a killer can. The right size for a proper gulp. Get it cold and take a big draught from a good glass and let the hop hit your throat. Superb. It's no session beer and there is a Tropical [read citrus] version which I haven't found yet but until I do, this is my number one! (Posted on 08/01/2017)

  • A decent US IPA

    Review by wgardner

Brash and aggressive hops, with lots of pine and grapefruit. It drinks brilliantly and love the big can. (Posted on 06/01/2017)

  • dangerous

    Review by dt

Great hoppy ipa that's taste doesn't reflect its strength be careful not to get carried away and treat like a session ipa like I did it gives a hangover from hell (Posted on 15/12/2016)

  • Strong IPA

    Review by shunt

At first I wasn't sure about this beer - since my initial one I've had the pleasure of trying it again 2 more time.
Its a strong very bitter IPA that slices your tongue with the added dryness coming from the 7.2% ABV.
A bit like olives and marmite - if you keep trying it it'll grow on you and you'll keep going back. (Posted on 14/12/2016)

  • Maybe my fav beer

    Review by Iddy

This beer had a very pleasant but strong hoppy taste. It had notes of caramel on the aroma. Didn’t taste like it was 7.2% which may end up being dangerous. (Posted on 09/12/2016)

  • One to savour..

    Review by Boom!

    1. Get the can good and cold
    2. Leave you pint glass in the fridge for 2 hours
    3. Pour
    4. Take a draught from the glass and enjoy that big hop hit.

One of my all time favourites. As one of the other reviewers said though, make sure the can hasn't been on the shelf for months. Not a session beer but a real beauty. (Posted on 06/12/2016)

  • One of my favourites

    Review by Chris

I love hoppy beers, and this is up there with the best. (Posted on 30/11/2016)

  • Sunk

    Review by Pinchy

Loved it. Though I'm partial to a hoppy and strong IPA anyways. A good sized can. Hoppy, floral, fruity, citrus and pine. This beer balances them all really well. Very well, almost too well. Like another reviewer said, make sure you eat. (Posted on 09/11/2016)

  • Not good

    Review by Jim

hops faded and not pleasant. must have been old (Posted on 15/10/2016)

  • Superb...

    Review by Handle with Care

This is the big brother on SN's IPA and it is really big brew indeed. Smooth, strong taste and when straight from the fridge a masterful drink. You can drink it on draft at the brewery in Chico, California and it certainly gives a zing to the evening. They even serve it in proper UK pints rather than the silly USA 'pint'. Be careful [eat first!] but enjoy! (Posted on 12/10/2016)

  • Solid IPA, would recommend

    Review by MilesK97

I thought this was a very good all round IPA. A strong hoppy taste with some fruity undertones gave it a nice balanced flavour. I will be having the Torpedo again! (Posted on 26/08/2016)

  • Disappointed

    Review by Thodd

I really didn't get the Hop Bomb explosion that I was expecting - Sure it was very bitter meaning that the high IBU's had come from extensive Hop use, but the flavour lacked the later Hop additions during the brew process with very little crisp citrus tropical flavours.
Maybe the can was too old (I forgot to look at the date) - the overall taste I got was the extensive alcohol mouth feel of a 7% beer and high bitterness.
    Such a same.

  • One of the best

    Review by Elliot

A hop bomb indeed. Even better in the can as there's more of it! One you can keep revisiting. (Posted on 15/08/2016)

  • Great beer

    Review by Ben

Well balanced, hoppy , bitter & spicy with malty sweetnes. Mild carbonation (Posted on 29/07/2016)

  • Excellent IPA, big can!

Review by Beer In The Bay

This is a great beer with fantastic flavours - pine, citrus, sweetness - all in a bigger than expected serving! (Posted on 13/06/2016)

  • Solid beer but underwhelming when older

    Review by McSpanner

I drink a lot of Sierra Nevada so bought this pint can to make the experience last a bit longer than the smaller bottles I find locally. Unfortunately it was almost a year old and had none of the expected "bright" hop character and aroma I know and love from this beer. It's a completely different beast when it is fresher. I had hoped that canning might have preserved that freshness slightly longer than bottling but, sadly this was not the case.
This was still a solid beer and was the only disappointment in an otherwise excellent shipment (all the other IPAs I ordered had much more recent packaged or born on dates- mostly within the last 3 months or so). (Posted on 28/05/2016)

  • Great big can

    Review by Soupy

This is great value for the size of the can, which is an American sized pint. Bitter hoppy tasting beer with great strength. (Posted on 15/05/2016)

  • Solid, quality IPA

    Review by Kiwi Duncan

This is my 'go to' IPA - if I'm in the mood for something that will be 'big enough', but not overkill. The sort of IPA you have if you 'just want a beer' but not looking to push your boundaries. Reliable, hoppy, even a touch 'crisp'. Good value too. (Posted on 11/05/2016)

  • Good tasting beer

    Review by Beast

I think my expectations was to high for this beer, and I was disappointed. Good beer overall (Posted on 11/05/2016)

  • Hop bomb

    Review by beer Buddy

A wonderful and large can of fresh hoppy goodness. A perfect ipa with all kinds of complex hops going on. Perfect. (Posted on 04/05/2016)

  • Hop (nautical) bomb

    Review by Llamaman

The supercharged version of SN's pale ale, this delivers massive pine hop character without much bitterness.
Could sink these (hohoho) all night (would probably regret it in the morning though, as it packs a well-disguised punch). (Posted on 08/04/2016)

  • Hoppy goodness

    Review by Abdyman

Another great beer from Sierra Nevada. Probably not the beer for you if you don't like american IPAs but if you do get this, you'll love it. (Posted on 29/03/2016)

  • Great Beer

    Review by Ben

Amazing, very nice brew. Expected hop power but not over the top. ABV is nowhere to be felt. Smooth. (Posted on 15/02/2016)

  • American Top Dog

    Review by Rockmaker

One of my favourite American IPA's. it packs a punch at easily compares to the best of British. I tried it for a change and keep coming back to it. Always nice to share. (Posted on 09/02/2016)

  • Brilliant

    Review by JonB

Fantastic IPA. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is good, but this is so much more flavourful and also quite a lot stronger. (Posted on 06/02/2016)

  • Stunning

    Review by DAvid

Big, sweet tropical fruit notes and a background of pine. Perfectly balanced with great hop character and a building, bitter finish. (Posted on 14/05/2015)

  • Great all round big bro to pale ale

    Review by BZ

This is a much more flavourful beer than the lower ABV pale ale and i prefer it because of this. Great caramel taste from malt base and strong enough to hold up all the bitterness it provides. (Posted on 10/02/2015)

  • Full flavoured big bro to the pale ale

    Review by BZ

Great big brother to the pale ale, with much more flavour IMO and a stronger malt base to help with the higher ABV, top stuff (Posted on 09/02/2015)

  • brilliant IPA

    Review by Dave H

This is really tasty and strong IPA, one to enjoy rather than rush as it will blow your mind (Posted on 28/01/2015)

  • So Funky!

    Review by Ay Pee Horne

Nice and punchy IPA, full of funky hops. A real West Coaster and very satisfying. Way too strong to sink all day, but a lovely drop nonetheless. Will definitely buy this one again. (Posted on 12/01/2015)
