Rochefort 8

Rochefort 8

Trappiste de Rochefort are top-fermented, bottle-conditioned beers, brewed within the Saint-R?my Abbey in Rochefort, Belgium.
Style Abbey and Trappist
Country Belgian Beers
ABV 9.20%
Serving Temp 9°C
Bottle Size 330ml

Interestingly, this beer was originally only brewed for New Year's Eve. Fortunately, this Trappist strong-dark ale from Rochefort is now available year-round! And good thing too: its rich maltiness, brown sugar, dried fruits, is not one to miss. While this beer tastes rather sweet at the beginning, some spicy notes, high carbonation, and a semi-dry finish help to balance it out. Aromas of dried fruits, caramel, spice, and a warming alcohol just add to its elegance and richness.

Rochefort Brewery is a Belgian Trappist brewery and has been brewing beer at the monastery since 1595--to this day using water that is drawn from a well within the monastery itself. In order to be a certified Trappist brewery it must meet the requirements that excess profits, beyond the monastery's operating expenses, are to be used for charitable endeavours.

Product Reviews

  • Quality in a bottle

    Review by Swand

The Rochefort produces 3 of the world's finest beers. This dark fruity and spicy beer is the middle in strength and the only question when choosing which to drink is which strength you are up to. (Posted on 06/01/2018)

  • Wonderful

    Review by Paul

If you enjoy Belgian beers, you have got to have this. #2 of the Rochefort Trio, a beautiful drink! (Posted on 04/01/2018)

  • Excellent Trappist beer

    Review by Jack

I have yet to try the Rochefort 10, but both the 6 and the 8 are amazing (Posted on 03/01/2018)

  • Strong by half!

    Review by Alex

Rather high abv 9.2, although actually tastes stronger! Difficult to have more than one in a session. Feels like an accomplishment finishing the bottle! (Posted on 02/01/2018)

  • Another Fine Trappiste

    Review by Carl

Another Fine Trappist Ale, similar in a way to chimay but it does have it's own distinctive rich taste and comes in a variety of strengths as well. Give it a go!. (Posted on 29/12/2017)

  • Excellent - don't buy it!

    Review by Llamaman

A fine brew - malty sweetness offset with warming booziness BUT... the 10 is better (more complex) and if that's too full-on for wallet and liver, the 6 can go toe-to-toe with this one. In fact, the 6 might be a bit more balanced as it doesn't have quite the same booziness. (Posted on 24/12/2017)

  • Not a 10

    Review by Dudes Brews

Got this after trying the excellent rocheforte 10 and it’s not hit the same heights, alcohol is more prominent not harsh but enough to make you pause! Some nice complex flavours but not the depth and smoothness of its big brother (Posted on 24/12/2017)

  • Spicy

    Review by RichMahogany

Beer tastes pretty strong and spicy preferred the Rochefort 10. (Posted on 22/12/2017)

  • Delicious dark beer

    Review by Reeds

A dark and fruity beer with hints of spiciness. Best enjoyed slowly in a chalice glass and savoured like a fine wine. (Posted on 21/12/2017)

    Review by Tom

Great beer as expected. Balanced with fruit and spice. (Posted on 16/12/2017)

  • Good beer

    Review by Arwel

Having been unimpressed by the murky colour and not being a fan of the darker beers, this impressed me,some rate it unfavourably to the 10 but a different drink and worth trying (Posted on 30/11/2017)

  • Very nice but the 10 is better

    Review by Bacchanalian

Fruity, like a christmas cake, rich like port. Very smooth. A less sophisticated, less complex version of the 10. (Posted on 26/11/2017)

  • Good .. but not great

    Review by SX

Got this bottle as part of a wonderful BeerHawk mystery case, and it was today's treat.
It's a fairly potent brew, I don't think that you could have too many of them. A nice tasting beer that I would happily drink again, though I may not search it out especially. (Posted on 27/07/2017)

  • Great beer

    Review by Fiasco

Fantastic beer. Obviously it as good as the 10, but really great. (Posted on 18/06/2017)

  • Slightly pricey

    Review by Scott W

The beer was decent, however lacked some taste, given the strength. (Posted on 12/02/2017)

  • Good Beer

    Review by capibara

Dark brown colored, just enough head on the top.
I could feel quite alcoholic when i smell it. It has various flavors when i taste it. Especially fruity smells as nice and charm. Overall very satisfied. (Posted on 13/01/2017)

    Review by TurboRay

For when the women at the dinner party exit to the drawing-room, leaving the gentlemen to drink and converse! Caramel, tobacco, bourbon! (Posted on 28/12/2016)

  • A good tasty strong beer

    Review by Steve

Bought an advent calendar and this was in it, a great tasting drink which I would definitely go back for more, beware of the strength as it does have a kick to it. (Posted on 21/12/2016)

    Review by Johnny

Superb. Beercraft at its finest. Bread, floral, grass, herbs, cheese, raisin. Brown, hazy body, frothy, tan head. Lightly sweet and sour, medium bitter. Amazing! Full body, thick feel. Average carbonation, abrupt finish. (Posted on 23/08/2016)

  • Superb!

    Review by John R

Cannot recall ever enjoying a beer quite as much as the first occasion that I sampled the Rochefort 8. I am a fan for life! (Posted on 24/05/2016)

  • Excellent specialist beer

    Review by Ryans

The Rochefort series are perfect when you want a richer stronger drink. Dark and fruity with hints of caramel and chocolate but an easier on the palate taste with all the flavours having a subtle edge. Perhaps too easy to drink given the alcohol content but definitely one of the finest beers around. (Posted on 13/05/2016)

  • Lovely...

    Review by Ady Gray

You'll not find much wrong with any of the Rochefort numbered series. This one delivers a punch which is palatable with a good mouthfeel and a combination of sweet/spicy. Cracker... (Posted on 11/05/2016)

  • Lovely strong beer

    Review by Ryans

A rich fruity flavoured dark beer with spiciness and a subtle sweetness. A perfect winter drink but I agree it's too good to only drink part of the year. (Posted on 08/05/2016)

A delicious dark and richly flavoured beer. The Rochefort series are all classic Belgian brews and this is no exception. (Posted on 20/03/2016)

  • Right nice

    Review by Tim

Nose of figs and over ripe fruit. Caramel, malt and boozy fruit cake (Posted on 19/03/2016)

  • Awesome - but the 10 is better

    Review by Seb

Sweet caramel aromas but belies it strength by being super smooth and malty. A fantastic beer. (Posted on 25/11/2015)

  • Very good

    Review by John

But the 10 is better. Muddy colour and malty taste. (Posted on 20/11/2015)

  • Delicious beer

    Review by Ryans

Fantastic dark malty and fruity beer. Has the warm taste of a winter beer but far too good to only drink part of the year. (Posted on 07/11/2015)

  • Fantastic beer

    Review by Ryans

One of the best Trappist beers around. Dark and malty lIke a winter ale but it would be a shame for such a delicious beer to not be available all year round. (Posted on 07/11/2015)

Delicious delicious delicious b (Posted on 17/10/2015)

  • Delicious beer

    Review by Ryans

Lovely rich tasting beer. Dark fruity chocolate flavour that goes down surprisingly easy for such a strong beer. Haven't tried the Rochefort 10 but this has to Benny favourite Belgian brown. (Posted on 16/10/2015)

  • Fantastic - but don't buy it.

    Review by Llamaman

Malty, delicious aroma or over-ripe fruit (especially banana). Alcohol well-concealed by a beautifully balanced beer.

In a world without Rochefort 10, this would be a world-beater. But the 10 does exist, and is the 8 with all the dials turned to 11. So unless you're being kind to wallet and liver, go for the 10. (Posted on 25/08/2015)

  • Baby Brother of the 10

    Review by Ay Pee Horne

Lots of over-ripe dark fruits, thick malts and boozy cake. Damn strong, so one to treat yourself with from time to time. If you think this is good, wait until you try the 10! (Posted on 10/06/2015)

  • Not bad, but the 10 is better ...

    Review by interzen

Not a bad introduction to the Rochefort range, the '8' is a bit of a misnomer since the ABV of this is actually 9.2%.

Pours a bit like a cross between swamp water and cold tea and exudes a smell like a cross between fermented fruitcake and burnt sugar - quite a heavy whiff of alcohol, too.

Tastes much the same: very malty, lots of stewed, dark fruits and a nice, lingering alcohol burn. It's good, but not brilliant - for this particular style I prefer Chimay Bleu, although the Rochefort 8 is definitely worth trying on its own merits.

Personally, of the Rochefort range I prefer the 10 but this is well worth a look if you're curious about Trappist ales (or just plain like them ...) (Posted on 10/03/2015)

  • Eight and counting

    Review by Stephen

This beer is a cracker - nearer 10% than the name suggests. That said, like the other Rocheforts, it is exceedingly palatable and does not feel over strong with alcohol. Dark chocolates, coffee and cream make this a beautiful after dinner sip. Perfect in front of a warm winter fire in a cosy room. (Posted on 13/02/2015)

  • Divide Rochefort 10 by 1.73

    Review by Jack Swans

Not as satisfying as it's big brother but still better than Chimay Blue in my opinion and that is a complement. Taste of figs and malts but the alcohol content is somehow masked making it quite easy to drink for a beerbthis strong. Heavenly. (Posted on 04/02/2015)

  • Smooth, dark and malty with dried fruit, chocolate and a hint of coffee notes

    Review by Ian

I'll admit I'm a fan of the Rochefort series, the 6, 8 and the 10. If you like one of them you'll probably like them all, it just happens that my appreciation of these fine beers goes up with each number. The 8 is a little more expensive than the 6 but I think it's worth it for the extra depth and flavour, it's similar to the 6 but the hints of chocolate and coffee seem more pronounced, strong, smooth and malty with definate dried fruit notes and a creamy head. Poured correctly into the right glass you should get roughly 60/40 beer to head which lasts if you remember to rinse the inside of the glass before you pour. Well worth having half a dozen (or more) in the cellar for when you want to treat yourself. (Posted on 04/03/2014)
