So what exactly does this Estonian brewery mean by a San Diego Session IPA? Well, it’s a West Coast IPA that is session strength. When you read West Coast, expect either a piney hit, a grapefruit hit or, as in this case, a bit of an oniony aroma. There’s a hint of chives (stay with us), on the nose, exactly as there should be. This is a hefty, meaty, umami-rich beer, even with notes of cardamom. If you’ve turned your nose up at the idea, then we insist you don’t. This is a great West Coast beer, whether you’re in San Diego or Sunderland.

Brewery Info

Põhjala was founded in Tallinn, Estonia at the end of 2011 by four Estonian beer enthusiasts and home brewers. Soon thereafter the company was joined by a Scottish head brewer, Chris Pilkington, with a few years of Brewdog experience under his belt.

Their beers span a broad range of styles, but with a particular focus on porters, barrel ageing, and ingredients from the forests of Estonia — as well as more contemporary styles. Põhjala currently exports to over 30 markets around the world and to almost every country in Europe.

Isn't Google translate wonderful?

Nose is peach and herby. Mouthfeel smooth from use of oats, light carbonation. Taste is tropical fruits, slightly bready. Finish is dry and bitter but short.
