Mmmmm. This is a spectacularly rich, dark porter from the Estonian brewery. A ‘Baltic’ porter is basically a very strong one, the type that was exported right across the Estonian coast. However, we can be fairly sure that early porters didn’t have the addition of coconut, vanilla and cardamom. And it’s the latter ingredient that really lifts the beer above many other strong porters. It adds a delicate spice and a savoury note that balances the coconut and vanilla. It’s a fantastic beer, another one, from Pohjala.
Põhjala was founded in Tallinn, Estonia at the end of 2011 by four Estonian beer enthusiasts and home brewers. Soon thereafter the company was joined by a Scottish head brewer, Chris Pilkington, with a few years of Brewdog experience under his belt.
Their beers span a broad range of styles, but with a particular focus on porters, barrel ageing, and ingredients from the forests of Estonia — as well as more contemporary styles. Põhjala currently exports to over 30 markets around the world and to almost every country in Europe.
