A Berliner Weisse is a mildly tart beer that comes from, well, you’ve guessed it. It is a delightfully refreshing summer wheat beer. Estonia’s brilliant Pohjala brewery has added a load of raspberries to the beer and have turned out a spritzy summer drink. The raspberries are very apparent on the nose before giving way to let the wheat shine through. Unlike so many beers with raspberries in, this is balanced, not over powered, and ripe for drinking now. Gosh, it’s good. Really good.
Põhjala was founded in Tallinn, Estonia at the end of 2011 by four Estonian beer enthusiasts and home brewers. Soon thereafter the company was joined by a Scottish head brewer, Chris Pilkington, with a few years of Brewdog experience under his belt.
Their beers span a broad range of styles, but with a particular focus on porters, barrel ageing, and ingredients from the forests of Estonia — as well as more contemporary styles. Põhjala currently exports to over 30 markets around the world and to almost every country in Europe.
