Curiouser and curiouser. Now here’s a beer to discuss with friends. This is MASSIVE. Being an Estonian brewery, this an Imperial Baltic Porter is probably a beer close to their hearts; the porter, a London beer, was often made stronger and exported to the Baltic states, and Russia. So what to expect from this 10.5% beast of a beer. Well, there’s a chocolate aroma, and we mean a 95% Madagascan chocolate aroma. Sipping it, there’s the addition of liquorice and perhaps the herbaceous kick that fans of Fernet Branca would like. Huge beer, huge flavour. And the colour? It could actually be a black hole.
Põhjala was founded in Tallinn, Estonia at the end of 2011 by four Estonian beer enthusiasts and home brewers. Soon thereafter the company was joined by a Scottish head brewer, Chris Pilkington, with a few years of Brewdog experience under his belt.
Their beers span a broad range of styles, but with a particular focus on porters, barrel ageing, and ingredients from the forests of Estonia — as well as more contemporary styles. Põhjala currently exports to over 30 markets around the world and to almost every country in Europe.
