Curiouser and curiouser. Now here’s a beer to discuss with friends. This is MASSIVE. Being an Estonian brewery, this an Imperial Baltic Porter is probably a beer close to their hearts; the porter, a London beer, was often made stronger and exported to the Baltic states, and Russia. So what to expect from this 10.5% beast of a beer. Well, there’s a chocolate aroma, and we mean a 95% Madagascan chocolate aroma. Sipping it, there’s the addition of liquorice and perhaps the herbaceous kick that fans of Fernet Branca would like. Huge beer, huge flavour. And the colour? It could actually be a black hole.

Brewery Info

Põhjala was founded in Tallinn, Estonia at the end of 2011 by four Estonian beer enthusiasts and home brewers. Soon thereafter the company was joined by a Scottish head brewer, Chris Pilkington, with a few years of Brewdog experience under his belt.

Their beers span a broad range of styles, but with a particular focus on porters, barrel ageing, and ingredients from the forests of Estonia — as well as more contemporary styles. Põhjala currently exports to over 30 markets around the world and to almost every country in Europe.

Strong Flavour
Review by
Made the mistake of letting a friend lucky dip beers out of my last box for us to try. This came out first, and a third of a pint annihilated my taste buds for the rest of the night.

A very thick, sharp, 'imperial' tasting porter, with that black-treacle style flavour (and mouth feel) that lingers.
No nonsense brew

Fantastic beer that will surprise you and satisfy you with every sip. Bold, thick and waxy on the tongue. Shared with friend made it more memorable. Will be back for it.
The Beast from the (North) East!!

Inky, oily and flat with a Houdini of a dark brown head vanishing almost instantly on drinking! Flavours are unidirectional but smooth with coffee elements thrown into the mix. Like its little brother Talveoo this porter is lacking a little muscle, but unlike that beer the Oo manages to hide its (higher!) ABV that much better. Nice!

Drinking this beer during our current inclement weather. It’s deep, dark and robust. A strong and warming beer for a wintry day. Not a summer drink that is for sure.
