What? Gruit? No, here’s a beer resurrected from the mists of time. A gruit. The days when hops were merely part of the mix if it happened to appear in the hedgerow with the rest of the ingredients that would temper the sweetness of the ale. This gruit is spiced with ‘Estonian herbs’, caraway and juniper berries and then barrel aged. It is, no doubt, a smackingly good beer. One that is richly spiced, and richly deserving of a big, sweet pie to accompany it. Delicious, serious, worthwhile.
Põhjala was founded in Tallinn, Estonia at the end of 2011 by four Estonian beer enthusiasts and home brewers. Soon thereafter the company was joined by a Scottish head brewer, Chris Pilkington, with a few years of Brewdog experience under his belt.
Their beers span a broad range of styles, but with a particular focus on porters, barrel ageing, and ingredients from the forests of Estonia — as well as more contemporary styles. Põhjala currently exports to over 30 markets around the world and to almost every country in Europe.
