Mittenwalder Jager Dunkel

Mittenwalder Jager Dunkel

The Mittenwalder brewery is 200 years old and is the highest brewery in Bavaria. Pure Alpine spring water is used in the traditional brewing process giving the product a unique clean and refreshing taste which complements the caramel quality of the Hallertauer hops. The beers are slow brewed using traditional methods and in strict accordance with the German Purity Law which means the only ingredients are water, hops, barley, and yeast.
Style Lager and Hybrid Beers
Country German Beers
ABV 5.2%

Pouring dark brown with ruby highlights, Mittenwalder Jager Dunkel has a rich, roasted malty body with notes of dried fruit, sweet caramel, brown bread and a hint of spice. A nutty flavour, earthy bitterness and pleasantly sour edge round off this complex dark beer.

Product Reviews

  • Nice Dunkel

    Review by martin

Dark, Malty taste, a very nice example of style (Posted on 10/01/2018)

  • Roasted

    Review by Ashley

A slightly disappointing dark beer, a slight taste of caramel and dark malts and a small head. (Posted on 24/11/2017)

  • Decent dunkel lager

    Review by James

It's a good dark wheat style lager, let down only by what tasted to me like a medicinal twang to it. But definitely not unpleasant and worth trying. (Posted on 04/09/2017)

  • A decent beer

    Review by Iron Hombre

Has a slightly sweet and toffee flavor that isn't too overpowering. The beer is very filling though. (Posted on 28/07/2017)

  • One bottle just isn't enough!

    Review by Matt

This beer is delicious. Smooth with toffee/caramel flavours. Slightly sweet and very more-ish. Great with a meal as it's not too lively, just as good on its own on a summer night.
    Great beer. (Posted on 15/07/2017)

  • A decent beer.

    Review by Gerry

This has a lightly floral and toffee aroma. A large head, which quickly disappears. A good light malt and caramel flavour, with a faint, lingering bitter taste, yet no way overpowering. A decent beer which I would have again. (Posted on 15/06/2017)

  • Good

  • Nom Nom

    Review by JerryBiscuits

I really like German dunkel beers... I hope this doesn't sound ignorant, but you seem to get a similar flavour profile as a Belgian dubbel, but lighter and more subtle, without the high alcohol content and heavy mouth-feel. This one met my expectations nicely with a malty caramel bittersweet flavour, with hints of raisin and prune. (Posted on 30/03/2017)

  • Good Dunkel

    Review by Ben

A very nice taste of malt and toffee although the taste is subdued, not too much in your face. A subtle but tasty beer without much head. A good Dunkel, i would recommend. (Posted on 18/10/2016)

  • Really nice

    Review by Jo

Lovely dark brown colour, rich caramel aroma, toffee and malty flavour with a medium mouthfeel, spicy yet slightly bitter aftertaste. Very pleasant surprise. (Posted on 28/09/2016)

  • Not too bad

    Review by Mik

A bit dark for the typical belgian beer. Brown lager... (Posted on 15/08/2016)

  • Tasty

    Review by Bizzle82

Was a very nice beer, rich, dark and just very enjoyable, very refreshing in the afternoon sun (Posted on 15/07/2016)

  • Through a beer darkly

    Review by Good head

Is a kind of cola type colour. Has a very subtle taste and is well carbonated though it didn't have a head at all. Could do with a lot more flavour and a bit more about it. (Posted on 09/05/2016)

  • stunning dunkel

    Review by yorkie55

  • Not much to say

    Review by Llamaman

A quality dark lager. Needs to warm up a little from fridge temp to really show its stuff. (Posted on 24/02/2016)

  • Meh

    Review by bonehead

Was expecting a lot more from this beer. Don\'t drink it with strong flavours. (Posted on 21/01/2016)

  • dark and malty

    Review by ayr_fan

My first Mittenwalder dark beer. Typically Bavarian, though not as gassy as the Munich variants.

A grown up taste, not one for lager louts. (Posted on 26/06/2015)

  • Surprised

    Review by Ady Gray

I wasn't expecting such rich flavours and this one caught me by surprise. Dark, malty, and complex. Lovely (Posted on 24/04/2015)

  • Good stuff

    Review by Ady Gray

I did this an injustice as it was part of a tasting session involving some Belgian Tripels. A second tasting left me with a favourable impression of this malty beauty. There are complex flavours here with just the right level of sourness (Posted on 01/04/2015)

  • Rich, tasty dunkel

    Review by Lee

As with most of Beer Hawk's great offerings, this was a new one on me. Overall I prefer the Brewers & Union dark, but this is a tasty, dark alternative. Malty and sour, as the description says. Good beer. (Posted on 28/12/2014)
