Routinely judged as one of the best gueuzes in the world, Lindeman’s Cuvée René is—without a doubt—the queen of gueuzes. A blend of old and young lambics matures in large oak barrels and then undergoes a secondary fermentation in champagne bottles to achieve a dry finish with an effervescent carbonation.
Admittedly, aromas and flavours of “dusty barnyard” and “earthy funk” can sound somewhat off-putting, but the notes of sour apple, lemon, and wood in this gueuze complement them nicely. Its lasting sour finish and medium body make this beer more accessible to the moderately adventurous than one might think.
