Hitachino Espresso Stout

Hitachino Espresso Stout

The Hitachino Nest beers are the Japan-based Kiuchi Brewery's brand of ales. Brewed using some traditional Sake brewing methods since 1996, the Hitachino Nest beers are the proud holders of many international beer awards.
Style Stout
Country Japanese Beers
ABV 7.0%
Serving Temp 8 to 10 °C
Bottle Size 330ml

Espresso stouts are everywhere; it’s true. Yet a good one doesn’t try to hide its flaws with big flavours. Instead, each note is highlighted in what seems to be a choreographed dance. The Japanese Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout is one of the good ones.

Espresso beans are added during the brewing process so its intense coffee flavours and aromas are to be expected. Vanilla, dark fruits and chocolate round out the stout’s complex taste. Its rich and smooth mouthfeel make this beer truly indulgent.

  • Coffee!

    Review by Kerry

Wow. Espresso to the max. If you don’t like dark, coffee beer steer clear of this one. But I love it! (Posted on 21/12/2017)

  • Pleasant

    Review by Phil

Really nice stout. Very balanced and not too strong a taste of alcohol. (Posted on 19/12/2017)

  • Decent coffee stout

    Review by Jack

There are plenty of coffee stouts out there; this is one of the better ones. Strong flavours - but you wouldn't want to drink more than one at a time. (Posted on 18/11/2017)

  • Yes....

    Review by AdyG

Yes, oh yes. This is how a coffee-based stout should be: no using the coffee to mask a lack of depth here. This has depth and flavour. Lovely (Posted on 01/08/2017)

  • Lovely stout from Kiuchi

    Review by DanAck

Great depth of flavour, deep & rich coffee with cream and chocolate flavour too, balanced with sweetness with a hint of berries in the finish. 8/10 (Posted on 29/07/2017)

  • OK

    Review by James

Bit strong on the coffee, not a bad drink but not one to write home about. (Posted on 28/07/2017)

  • Smooth and bitter

    Review by Mike

A good, solid after dinner beer. Really tastes of espresso as opposed to some other coffee stouts. (Posted on 11/07/2017)

  • fantastic flavour, slightly overfizzed

    Review by lenoz

I'd been looking forward to putting this inside me for some time, as a fan of other Hitachino beers, and it did not disappoint. It's a touch fizzy for my liking but the flavour is very nice, rich strong coffee tastes coming through nicely. (Posted on 05/07/2017)

  • Arigato gozaimas

    Review by Pud

Probably a unique Japanese take on a coffee stout, Dark pour with a creamy head, good coffee taste with malty hints. It'll do for me. (Posted on 04/07/2017)

  • Not bad

    Review by Jo

Black colour, sweet coffee, dark fruit (berry?) and slightly malty aroma, thick creamy mouthfeel, espresso, chocolate and vanilla flavour, sweet, slightly malty and bitter aftertaste. (Posted on 29/06/2017)

  • Mmmmmmmm

    Review by Luke

Deep brown pour with good coffee aroma and roasted malts to taste this is one big flavour drink, I was very keen to try this and it didn't dissapoint (Posted on 27/06/2017)

  • Alas!

    Review by Peter

I was really looking forward to this ale, and was keen to see if it was decent. I have to say, there's some appeal here, clearly Japanese take on the stout style and a good load of coffee in the brew. I am a fan of coffee stouts, I am, but this was a little too slippery and just didn't deliver on the promise. Nice enough aroma, though even that lacked the coffee, and the mouthfeel was a little too oily for my taste. I can imagine there's a great market for this and if you like subtle pales and hoppy IPAs but usually turn your nose up at stouts this is an offering worth trying. If you're looking for a good imperial stout and like your dark ales then this is definitely one to cross off the list but I, alas, am not a huge fan. (Posted on 29/05/2017)

  • Delicious

    Review by Growler

deep brown pour verging on black. medium creamy dark tan head with some loose lacing. Aroma is heavy on the dark chocolate, black coffee, espresso, dark fruit. Taste follows leading from medium sweet chocolate to a long lasting roast bitter finish. medium to full body, average carbonation, slightly slick. (Posted on 01/05/2017)

  • Fantastic

    Review by Beebo

small stable creamy brown head, opaque extremely dark brown color, flavor of toasted dark bread, coffee and cocoa, espresso coffee flavor with vanila, bittersweet chocolate and some toasted bread in the back, mellow sweetness, lightish bitterness, lively carbonation. Nice and highly enjoyable. (Posted on 16/03/2017)

I've not had a bad Hitachino. This is my favourite one. Sweet creamy nutty and caramel flavours with a slightly bitter after taste of coffee. (Posted on 11/01/2017)

  • Fantastic coffee stout

    Review by MH

Pours almost black with a medium to big beige head. Aroma is fresh, vanilla, nuts some orange, caramel and herbs, and roasted coffee. Taste is sweet, with notes of toffee/caramel and dark chocolate and espresso. Bitter finish, rich and tasty stout. NICE! (Posted on 27/12/2016)

  • A good espresso

    Review by Middy

A good espresso stout that comes in a bottle not too big, so doesn't stick around on the tastebuds. The flavours that come through are well received. (Posted on 28/11/2016)

  • Pretty nice stout

    Review by Jo

Black colour, some carbonation, very thin mocha head with little retention, sweet coffee, dark fruits and slightly malty aroma, thick creamy mouthfeel with some carbonation, espresso, chocolate and vanilla flavour, sweet, slightly malty and bitter aftertaste, not the best stout out there but pretty good. (Posted on 28/11/2016)

  • Bansai!!

    Review by Edward

Japan jumps onto the craft brewing bandwagon & the offerings from Hitachino are the only ones I can consistently find generally available in the UK, which is no bad thing :) They have a core IPA/Amber/Stout range, and this the Stout has been beefed-up with the addition espresso beans during the brewing process. Surprisingly, however, it emerges as a well-balanced beer and rather than being oveshadowed the underlying stout shines through nicely. Super but not quite superlative. (Posted on 21/08/2016)

  • Impressive

    Review by Superb

The rich boldness of the coffee and chocolate in this brew left me wanting more. Quite expensive but worth every penny. (Posted on 21/08/2016)

  • Excellent

    Review by LoveBeers

Great example of a coffee stout. A really rich and deep flavour. If you've never tried this style, then this is a good place to start. (Posted on 03/08/2016)

  • Good Espresso Stout

    Review by Ben

Coffee flavours are quite restrained for an espresso stout but this is a plus here I think because as a pure stout the taste is outstanding. (Posted on 29/07/2016)

  • Enjoyable

    Review by Blind_Drunk

I know a lot of people say the Japanese don't know how to make beer but to them I would say, get your mouth round a pint of this. I have tried two beers from this brewery and both where very nice indeed. (Posted on 02/04/2016)

    Review by BJ 53

I knew a few stouts existed in Japan, but was still surprised how good this one is. True to the style - chocolate, coffee, etc - and none the worse for it. Well worth a try. (Posted on 15/01/2016)

  • Most impressive!

    Review by Whisky Socks

Hitachino Espresso Stout is a luxuriously smooth drink with a pleasantly pungent aroma – enough said I think. (Posted on 27/11/2015)

  • Superb...

    Review by Ady Gray

Some espresso stouts overdo the coffee to mask the fact that there\'s not a lot else going on. Hitachino doesn\'t; this is a big coffee hit but the complexity of the underlying fruit and malt still comes through. As an example, it is a leading one; so smooth to drink; so worthy of a re-visit... (Posted on 08/10/2015)

  • Possibly the best coffee stout out there.

    Review by interzen

If you thought Japanese beer stopped at the likes of Sapporo and Kirin, think again.

This is, apparently, a Japanese interpretation of the American stout style and I have to say that it's an absolute stunner. Stuffed full of 'dark' smells and flavours, this will absolutely knock your socks off: dark, roasted malts, chocolate and, of course, coffee with just a hint of alcohol warmth to keep things interesting.

Absolutely stunning - prepare to have your perceptions of Japanese beer altered, big style. (Posted on 13/02/2015)
