Hitachino Amber Ale

Style Brown and Amber Ale
Country Japanese Beers
ABV 6.0%
Serving Temp 6 to 8 °C
Bottle Size 330ml

Japan’s Kiuchi Brewery has found international recognition thanks to its multi-award-winning Hitachino Nest beers. The Hitachino Nest Amber Ale is brewed using American Cascade and Chinook hops and a gorgeous blend of high-quality malts.

The malts are the most obvious qualities with caramel, grains, toffee and biscuits rising to the top of the aroma and flavour. Pine, grass, dried fruits and orange also pop through. This amber ale is perfectly balanced between bitter and sweet and its soft carbonation leaves a satisfying finish.

Product Reviews
  1. Nice one...
    Review by AdyG

This is malty with plenty of hops. The caramel comes through well and is balanced by a burst of refreshing hops (Posted on 24/07/2017)

  2. Japanese amber
    Review by Mike

Quite rich and malty. Well balanced. (Posted on 11/07/2017)

  3. Lovin the caramel
    Review by Marit

Had a few from Hitachino and they’re all pretty decent, Lovely caramel-hoppy-citrus aroma opens up the moment the beer hits the glass. Flavour also good – also caramel with cherry and (I think) plum. A good citrus bitterness throughout the beer, which is very quaffable. Good beer. (Posted on 28/06/2017)

  4. Nice red
    Review by Pippa

Nice beer, tasty and an excellent brewery, deep flavour profile and not too strong (Posted on 18/06/2017)

Not bad but the wheat ale by hitachino is much better, so tasty, a shame they haven't cracked this one (Posted on 13/04/2017)

  11. A nice surprise
    Review by Cassian

Wasn't expecting much but a very nice drop, not overly powerful and a good ale for a session (and a pretty good session it would be) (Posted on 12/04/2017)

    Review by MJ

It's very light and smooth it is good in it's own right, but definitely on a light side. (Posted on 24/03/2017)

  18. Nice beer
    Review by JP

Light tasting beer, very refreshing, slight bitterness. If you like strong tasting beer, this is not a beer for you, but it's good beer if you want something refreshing with mild undertones of caramel. (Posted on 19/03/2017)

A good ale. Nothing special but a decent taste and decent texture. Did not blow me out of the water but still very drinkable. (Posted on 03/10/2016)

    Review by Ben_with_the_beard

    これはちょっといいビールでした。シンプルだが良いと私のコレクションのためのクールなボトルトップ。 (Posted on 04/09/2016)

  29. Bansai!!
    Review by Edward

Japan jumps onto the craft brewing bandwagon & the offerings from Hitachino are the only ones I can consistently find generally available in the UK, which is no bad thing :) They have a core IPA/Amber/Stout range, and this the Amber is pretty easy-going. Nothing to rave about, and too sweet for a session bitter but certainly worth a try!! (Posted on 21/08/2016)

  30. Dark
    Review by Good head

Very dark in colour. Has a robust taste that lingers briefly. Hoppy and sweet and worth a go. (Posted on 10/05/2016)

  31. Unfortunately average
    Review by Jo

Dry, fruity aroma, malty taste with a hint of toffee, followed by a bitter aftertaste. Not as good as the Japanese Classic Ale. (Posted on 03/04/2016)

  32. Slightly uncouth
    Review by Andrew

Plenty of flavour but a little overbearing for my taste (Posted on 17/03/2016)

  33. Decent
    Review by Blind_Drunk

Not bad but not a brilliant beer (Posted on 12/02/2016)

  34. Lovely Red Ale
    Review by Danny

A nice caramel tasting ale, sweet hoppy and smooth. (Posted on 31/01/2016)

  35. hoppy beer with character
    Review by whatever

this is a bit of a different take on the usual hoppy beer and one of the nicest hoppys i\'ve tried! will buy more
    (Posted on 23/01/2016)

  36. Ever wanted to know how red tasted
    Review by terrier

Bags of flavour. It\'s a shame the bottle was not bigger. I will be back for more of this gem. (Posted on 29/12/2015)

  37. Average Amber
    Review by Ay Pee Horne

I've had pretty much everything that HN have made available on the UK market, but this was a bit disappointing by their usual high standards. It's just a bit wishy-washy, with nothing to rave about. (Posted on 09/11/2015)

  38. Impressive
    Review by Ady Gray

Not a bad number from a new brewery to me. I\'m liking what they do so far... (Posted on 13/10/2015)

  39. Impressive and surprising
    Review by Dale May

I\'ve had the Hitachino White Ale before (and that\'s a stonking beer fyi) so on the back of that I ordered a few bottles of this. It has an odd, slightly sake-ish, slightly molasses-ish flavour behind a pleasingly punchy copper ale. It\'s really, really good. One thing I would say is that I doubt you\'d want to knock 10 of these back one after the other. It\'s not really a session ale, more of a couple of bottles treat in the evening. (Posted on 23/09/2015)

  40. Surprise
    Review by 101proof

I didn't expect such a well rounded beer with the depth this had from a Japanese brewer. Very nice with a sweetness to it. (Posted on 29/05/2015)

  41. Wow
    Review by Ben

Really impressed with this one. One of the nicest I've tried. Got to sample more from these guys (Posted on 28/05/2015)

  42. Cool label art ... distinctly average beer.
    Review by interzen

I've had a couple of Hitachino beers in the past (Espresso Stout and the Red Rice Beer) and both were excellent and suitably different. The Amber Ale was, truth be told, a bit disappointing.

It looks more like a red ale than an amber - it's very dark, almost coppery in hue and there was almost nothing going on in the smell department. It tastes a bit more lively, though, with an interesting transition from hops to malt/fruit and then back to hops again.

As amber ales go, it's not bad at all - trouble is, the market's pretty crowded and being Japanese just isn't enough to raise it above 'average'. Worth a try if you fancy something different. (Posted on 03/05/2015)

  43. Don't be frightened. The Japanese know how to brew!
    Review by Don't be frightened

I have had the luxury of tasting many wonderful Japanese beers as I live in South East Asia (I am British). The Hitachino beers are unabashed and good quality. I do prefer the Yoho Brewing Company's efforts but am VERY pleased to see the Nest on here. If you are looking at this page then take the plunge. You will not be disappointed! (Posted on 03/05/2015)

  44. Owly good
    Review by Abdyman

A great hoppy beer with some sweetness.
I've previously had Hitachino Espresso Stout which was also fantastic and have their Pale Ale which I will be eagerly trying very soon. If that lives up to the other two I will be after as many other Hitachino brews as I can get my hands on. (Posted on 28/04/2015)
