Style Stout
Country British Beers
ABV 9%
Serving Temp 14-16 °C
Bottle Size 275ml
Simply the most intense beer I have ever tasted. The complexity of the flavours are so huge it's hard to break them out. It's thick treacle, huge boozy fruits, sherry, maybe port and a hundred other things all distilled into this little bottle and then marinaded in melted oak. A must try! Harvey's Imperial Extra Double Stout won Europe's Best Imperial Stout at the World Beer Awards 2015.

  1. Very nice
    Review by Matt

You can certainly see why this is rated as one of the best Imperial Stouts in the UK. (Posted on 17/08/2017)

  2. Strong and thick
    Review by James

Hits like a truck, very thick and strong. Smell isn't great, fair amount of flavour to the taste but it's hard to enjoy when it's this gloopy. (Posted on 31/07/2017)

  3. Thoroughly enjoyed!
    Review by Woodsy

Full of flavour, long lasting - a great stout if you like this sort of thing. I do! (Posted on 19/07/2017)

  4. One of my favourites
    Review by Jo

Black colour, liquorice, coffee, port, whiskey, slightly malty aroma, thick, oily, creamy, syrupy mouthfeel, berry, chocolate, caramel, whiskey, slight vanilla flavour, slightly bitter, smoky, salty aftertaste. (Posted on 17/07/2017)

  5. Not for my liking
    Review by Double yuk

I love my stouts but that was a bit too much, definitely not for my taste (Posted on 17/07/2017)

  6. Possibly gone off?
    Review by Chris

My bottle tasted a bit off. Lacks quality and smoothness of foreign competitors. Clumsy. More I drank the more it tasted like a lambic, one word- muck. (Posted on 30/05/2017)

  7. Not my kind of stout
    Review by wgardner

I like my stouts but this has a tar taste to it that I just don't like. Not bas (Posted on 08/05/2017)

  8. Thick & boozy
    Review by Daveisme

Very thick and very Boozy double imperial stout a must for dark beer lovers. (Posted on 28/04/2017)

  9. Up to expectations!
    Review by Pud

Read various reviews and tasting notes, they were spot on. A taste sensation that you want to gulp but need to sip to explore the multifaceted experience that is a truly wonderful stout. (Posted on 10/04/2017)

  10. Excellent
    Review by S Stanbridge

Beautiful stout. Smooth as silk with lovely aroma and a very satisfying aftertaste. (Posted on 07/03/2017)

  11. Glorious gloop
    Review by Bumblebee

As thick and smooth as a milkshake. Chocolate, molasses and sour cherries.
    A masterpiece. (Posted on 04/02/2017)

  12. Sweet 'n 'sour sensory overload.
    Review by David H

Stunning. Top beer from one of England's oldest and most revered breweries. Sweet (molasses, cherries, treacle), and, er, sour? Brettanomyces yeast in there? It sets your mouth tingling, and is so thick that there's a brown sticky layer adhering to the bottom of your beer glass when you come to wash it up the next morning, even though you thought you'd drained every last drop. I need a longer tongue... Can I give it ten out of 5? (Posted on 11/01/2017)

  13. Great
    Review by Jo

Lovely dark colour, pours like treacle, strong port and sherry aroma, sweet liquorice taste, quite fruity. Thick mouthfeel, a must try! (Posted on 28/12/2016)

  14. Disappointing
    Review by Tinman72

I wasn't keen on this beer only reason I've give 5star is because I makes a lovely steak and ale pie (Posted on 07/12/2016)

  17. My new favourite beer
    Review by Good Head

This beer is amazing. It is dark with a diminishing head. It is really thick and delicious with a great smell of port and fruits. It smells like fruit cake loaded with booze and tastes like win. (Posted on 05/12/2016)

  18. One of the best
    Review by Middy

If you like stouts, this imperial will be for you.dont let the 9% abv put you off. The flavours hit the nose before you taste it, excellent. (Posted on 27/11/2016)

  19. Amazing
    Review by Llamaman

A really great beer. Thick, complex, one to take your time over. (Posted on 22/11/2016)

  20. An absolute winner
    Review by LoneR

I have had this from Beer hawk on several occasions now. A consistently good beer, with flavour and satisfaction written all over it (Posted on 13/11/2016)

  21. Heavy
    Review by Paul

Complex, bags of flavours.. It's thick, intense and boozy. Powerhouse of a beer. Must try (Posted on 07/10/2016)

  22. Normal service is resumed
    Review by Llamaman

After the (slight) disappointment of my second try I returned with a fresh palate, and am happy to confirm that this beer is delicious. Hurrah. (Posted on 16/09/2016)

  23. Not so good second time round
    Review by Llamaman

Having been amazed by this back in March, I thought I'd give it another go. Sadly this time wasn't quite as good. I'd had a hoppy weissbeer earlier so maybe my tastebuds were a bit off, but it seemed more muted and less complex than before.
Still, a very enjoyable - and different - beer nonetheless and I've 3 more to confirm my opinion! (Posted on 19/08/2016)

  24. Great little dangerous potion!
    Review by Mik

Very complex imperial stout. Notes of caramel, coffee and fruit. It is worth to try it. (Posted on 18/08/2016)

  25. Mental
Review by change from a 10

OMG, This beer is intense. Nearly blew me head off.

Was looking forward to trying my fist Russian Imperial stout as I thought It might be the only thing that can match the trappists.

However this was too much. More like drinking port with an overbearing licorice aroma and taste. It poured like diesel with no head.

I found it hard to get through but it was an interesting experience! (Posted on 31/07/2016)

  26. Different...but really good!
    Review by Ben

I have never had a stout quite like this; the fruit flavors are huge, which I was definitely not expecting; a pretty excellent brew (Posted on 29/07/2016)

  27. Fantastic!
    Review by LoneR

    Always a winner for me!
This stout has everything I look for in flavour, looks and aftertaste. Cannot praise it enough. (Posted on 14/05/2016)

  28. Heavy Duty
    Review by Kaz

This is a big, bad (in a good way) heavy duty beer! As a few reviewers mention it's a complex beer, and its intensity won't be too everyone's taste. But if you like your stout heavy and full of a myriad of flavours with quite a punch to back it up then this is the beer for you. (Posted on 02/05/2016)

  29. So many flavours
    Review by Jo

Lovely dark colour, pours like treacle, strong port and sherry aroma, sweet liquorice taste, quite fruity. Thick mouthfeel, a must try! (Posted on 25/04/2016)

  30. A knockout beer
    Review by BJ 53

Not for the fainthearted. An extremely complex, powerful beer, with lots of malt to the fore and a balancing bitterness. Probably the nearest modern interpretation of a Russian Imperial Stout - well done Harveys! (Posted on 22/03/2016)

  31. Absolutely fabulous
    Review by Llamaman

    Small bottle, HUGE beer.
Pours like treacle, and that's only the start of a bewildering journey. The taste is hard to pin down and impossible to describe properly. Molasses, dark fruit, liquorice, soured cream, coffee, chocolate, alcohol... there's so much going on it's hard to make sense of it all.
A strange and wonderful thing to take your time over. (Posted on 20/03/2016)

  32. Liquid Toffee
    Review by Ninja Terrier

This is a very heavy beer in constancy flavour and alcohol content, all of which compliment each other. This is the first Harveys brew that I have liked. Well worth a try. (Posted on 02/02/2016)

  33. Off Bottle?
    Review by Ay Pee Horne

Surely I had an off bottle, as what I poured out was utterly grim. Sour, spoiled milk with an astringent taste. I\'d give it another go as it\'s clearly not Beer Hawk\'s fault, but my experience was not a good one. (Posted on 20/01/2016)

  34. Lovely.
    Review by Johnny

Beautiful imperial stout. Up there with the best. Will be ordering again. You won\'t be disappointed. (Posted on 19/01/2016)

  35. fantastic stout
    Review by johnny

Delicious and strong. Just great. (Posted on 18/01/2016)

  36. Silky smooth
    Review by LoneR

I have had this several times, and always found it silky, with a sweet aroma and it seemed to change with each sip in taste. Obviously not as silky as say an Oyster stout, this sits on my sunday dinner table as often as I can! (Posted on 16/01/2016)

  37. Awesome stout that\'s very complex
    Review by Seb

Extremely rich and complicated, but it\'s awesome (Posted on 11/01/2016)

  38. average
    Review by Bammers

just didn\'t quiet hit the wow! button, well made with nice malt and bitterness, just a little dissapointing (Posted on 04/01/2016)

  39. Classic imperial stout
    Review by Sean121212

This is complex and rewarding. Love the liquorice undertones one of my favourite night caps. (Posted on 29/12/2015)

  40. Top of the class...
    Review by Ady Gray

Winner of medals this year, this is one cracking, complex, dark, and heavy beauty of a stout. At 9% it is not to be taken lightly... (Posted on 17/12/2015)

  41. Bit too much for me
    Review by Harry

Gave this a punt, was a bit too bitter and heavy for me. I tend to prefer smoother stouts like milk stouts. Im probably not the best judge for stout like this one. (Posted on 08/12/2015)

  42. Intriguing, complex and at times baffling.
    Review by TheBeerBooth

Heavy, almost syrup-like, this beer is full of complex and competing layers of aroma and flavour with aniseed and spice, molasses and herbs. Every sip was different and luxurious. Difficult to assess as it is inconsistent (but all good). (Posted on 24/10/2015)

  43. A bit to wee heavy...
    Review by Cresp

On the nose you can smell dark fruits and hint of liquorice and alcohol. it tastes incredibly sweet, treacle like and perhaps a bit of dark brown sugar. I would recommend drinking this after a light meal because of the heaviness and sweetness of this Stout or at the end of a drinking session. (Posted on 09/10/2015)

  44. Strong, guttsie and a must for stouters
    Review by Adie

This stout certainly has it all. Taste in abundance with a kick like Stuart Pearse (for those who remember him) If you like your bottled stout, will then you just have to try this...recommended. (Posted on 18/02/2014)
