Some beers come and go, some beers however develop their own life, their own history, their own future. When brewers at Founders Brewing Co, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, released KBS, they probably thought it would be good, but probably didn’t imagine the fuss it would cause. And when we mean fuss, we mean a queueing-at-dawn, inflated-price-on-internet, blog-post-filling, RateBeer-loved, 100%-scoring beer. It became one of the world’s most sought-after beers. If it sounds like hype, it is, but this was a beer that deserved every superlative adjective. KBS, a bourbon barrel-aged chocolate coffee stout, weighing in at 11.7%, is the best imperial stout in the world. Or is it?

CBS is the Canadian Breakfast Stout. It’s the same base as KBS but, get this, the bourbon barrels it is aged in used to hold maple syrup. Yup. Expect that rich maple syrup balanced by roasted coffee and smooth chocolate notes. Is it as good as KBS? (Even better. Shhh!)

Brewery Info

Originally brewing middle-of-the-road beers for a wide and not-terribly-engaged audience, Founders realised that they’d have to change if they wanted to survive. They started making bold and complex beers instead, launching themselves to craft beer fame.

From coffee-infused Breakfast Stout, bourbon barrel-aged Backwoods Bastard and a 15% barleywine called Bolt Cutter, you can’t accuse Founders of being dull. As well as brews that push the boundaries, their lower abv. range is a more accessible introduction and includes the excellent All Day IPA.

Really good flavour of maple syrup - not sure if that’s good in a beer.
Top beer, but personally prefer KBS

An amazing beer

Plenty of flavour; chocolate, coffee and maple come through in abundance. Not too sweet, and absolutely delicious. Doesn't taste like an 11.7% beer either.

Perfect balance of sweetness maltness and alcohol at 11.7% it’s hard tell ABV.
It’s in my top ten beers and imperial stouts go.
Hard to find better at that price you won’t be disappointed.
Can stand your spoon up in it.

I am a fan of Wiper and True's stout for it's full bodied nature. This however, goes to the next level. Bags of flavour but it is very strong. Not a beer I would want to drink a lot of in one go, but fantastic as a treat.
Strong and sweet

Pours black and mysterious. I was really interested in this after reading the good reviews. I wasn't disappointed. This tastes sweet and malty, which offsets the strength of the beer. It comes in a small bottle, and that is a good thing. However, there are better novelty stouts/porters out there; Alaskan Smoked Porter for one, but this worth a try. I'm going to try other beers from these guys, as they clearly know how to brew some good beers.
Surprisingly excellent

I am no beer connoisseur; and certainly no expert - I bought this on a whim purely to try. I opened it and expected it to be foul - how wrong I was. It smells gorgeous, coffee and chocolate coming through really strongly. Drinking it reveals the sweetness and the bourbon back-story. Can’t wait to try the KBS as perhaps this is a touch too sweet for me, nonetheless an incredible drink (you will not believe it’s 11% ABV!)
It's Sweeter...

...than KBS. And, perhaps unfortunately, that's really all you need to know.

It's a very nice beer as you'd expect from Founders, particularly given how good their other Breakfast Stouts are (hence the 4 stars), but is it worth the money?

If you are happy paying for KBS, then an extra 50p for a sweeter and more treacle-y experience is not much to ask (and, let's be honest, you're going to buy one just to try, anyway!)

But if you are like me and prefer the regular Breakfast Stout, you might feel a tad unsatisfied.
