De Molen Hel & Verdoemenis

Less hoppy than Rasputin and sweeter too -it’s big, black, roasted and complex! Caramel & Chocolate to taste with an smoky, ashy nose. This is the highest scoring De Molen on ratebeer and a must try.

What can you say about De Molen? A brewery with a huge international reputation that far outstrips it's miniscule production capacity of 500 litres kettles. The head brewery Menno Olivier personifies everything craft beer should be, starting off as a homebrewer with genuine skill and enthusiasm and developing his art in perfectly conceived brews, the sheer range and quality of the beer is astonising. Everything from De Molen is truly extraordinary and what's great is it's all about the beer- no fancy packaging, no self aggrandized hype, just brilliant, brilliant beer
  1. Wow! Review by Mik

Punchy and soft at the same time! Quite deep and dark. De Molen know what they do. (Posted on 18/08/2016)

  2. Nice Review by Johnny

Pours a thick heavy black tar pour with an ephemeral Java head. Nose is heavy strong roasted malt with notes of bitter black licorice. Taste is bittersweet chocolate, which lingers and deep roasted woody malt, alcohol hidden despite the ABV . Finishes on the same tasting notes, mild lacing, with a dry chocolate sweet ending. 3. Hel Yeah! Review by the crobar

great impy stout. lots of flavour very deep and dark. sip and enjoy (Posted on 14/07/2016)

  4. To the bloke how got a bottle past its sell by date Review by Harrystrill

Mate this beer says on the lable drink within 40 YEARS ! Think your sell by date may have been the date it was bottled ! (Posted on 01/06/2016)

  5. A Hel-acious Beer Review by Jericholic

De Molen are fast becoming one of my favourite brewers. This treat is second only to the mighty Rasputin.
The strong flavour hints of coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts, burnt wood, citrus and earthy hops linger within the strong alcoholic taste befitting the 10.2%.
If you have never tried a beer from De Molen, and you love your dark and rich beers, you could do far worse than starting with this. (Posted on 23/05/2016)

  6. Great RIS Review by Johnny

Almost no head. Smell of dark grains, a bit of chocolate and coffee. Overwhelming smell of dark roasted bread crust. A bit too much alkohol in smell. In taste the same. Overall good and drinkable RIS. (Posted on 17/05/2016)

  7. The Devil Has All The Best Beers Review by Llamaman

If this is what's served in Hell's bar, reserve me a table.

There's a lot of very good beer out there, quite a few excellent ones, but occasionally you stumble across something that reminds you just how great beer can be. From the first sip this has brought a huge smile to my face - I'm only 1/4 through it and already I think this is on my all-time top 5.

Dark, dark, dark - dark malt, dark fruit, dark chocolate - plus coffee and even hints of smoke and liquorice to complete the collection of 'Stuff That's Dark'.

A truly astounding beer that makes you feel sorry for other brewers trying to match this. (Posted on 08/04/2016)

  8. Beautiful Review by Johnny

Aroma of dark malts, dark chocolate, dark fruits, leather and alcohol. Taste of dark malts, dark chocolate, dark fruits, leather, licorice and coffee. Low carbonation, medium bitterness and full body. Very nice and smooth imperial stout. Glad i bought this one. (Posted on 22/02/2016)

  9. Complex Stout Review by Gordo

A lovely, tasty complex imperial stout.

Can De Molen do any wrong? (Posted on 17/09/2015)

  10. Gimmie more! Review by Mr Egg White

Absolute winner! Will be ordering more of these little beauties! (Posted on 09/09/2015)

  11. Lovely stout but.... Review by Cresp

This is a really nice stout. Unfortunately, though I was sent a bottle with the best before date being 18/12/14 I expect better from beerhawk.

BH Editor: V Glad you enjoyed it, it's one of my favourites. It's the bottled on date they put on this beer rather than the best before which they they give as 20 years plus :) Cheers (Posted on 08/09/2015)

  12. When it works, it works... Review by Elliott.jh

Not much in the way of a 'Porter', more of a strong, dark Scotch ale in my opinion. But all in all still very quaff-able and struggled to find much else to question about this beer. (Posted on 10/08/2015)

  13. Make that 6 stars ... Review by interzen

The first stout I had from De Molen was Rasputin and, frankly, it was disappointing. This makes up for it than then some.

If you want a big, bruiser of an imperial stout then look no further - it's big, it's dark, it's complex and it's absolutely delicious. Chocolate, coffee, dark roasted malts and a hint of burnt sugar - it's got the lot, and at something like 10% ABV it's dangerously easy drinking.

If this is what Hell tastes like, then I'm there. (Posted on 17/07/2015)

  14. A Bloody Big Beer Review by Ay Pee Horne

Hugely impressive and complex imperial stout. Very punchy, with a fair amount of booziness present. One to sip over an hour or so to really bring out the depth of all the roasted flavours. Dynamite! (Posted on 20/06/2015)

  15. Perfect Imperial Stout Review by wreck

Thick, oily and black with not much of a head. Aromas of treacle, port, roasted malts... tastes chocolate, coffee, treacle, port, caramel, brown sugar... lovely alcohol warmth. Thick in the mouth, but still alarmingly drinkable. Not too sweet or cloying. Fantastic beer. (Posted on 14/06/2015)

  16. 1 is enough Review by molen tasting trial

Imperial stout - rare, so barley wine similarities.. Bloody strong tasting although weaker .4% than Rasputin that I prefer.
But drinkable slowly. (Posted on 30/05/2015)

  17. thick & sweet Review by molen mill drinker

Ignore my porterish review- that was hamer&sickle

    Strong, sweet, thick. Dark head,
Lingering slightly liquorish taste buds.. Drink slow.
    Roasted chocolate 10%.
    Interesting combination.

    Great beers from the mill'.

Maybe UK m not hardcore enough! (Posted on 30/05/2015)

  20. hell & damnation Review by molen mill regular

As the name ! Strong & condemning.. Tastes flavoursome, but just to string in both for me.. Half a glass? Maybe I'm not hardcore enough (Posted on 30/05/2015)

  21. punchy Review by molen mill regular

    Amazing strong dark stout,
But just too strong tasting & volume personally.
I can drink one bottle though.. (Posted on 30/05/2015)

  22. smokin Review by molen mill regular !

Nice, drinkable , tasty beer with not too strong volume.
    Interesting porterish (Posted on 30/05/2015)

  23. lovely beer Review by bammers1954

this is the non barrel aged version of this famous brew, I really liked it, lovely balance and great depth and complexity. I would say a benchmark modern stout beautifully made (Posted on 05/01/2015)
