Details

The most famous of the Trappist beers and best enjoyed in its distinctive Trappist chalice, this is without doubt a beer of great tradition. The Cistercian Trappist monks of Chimay have been brewing since 1862, with their abbey being located on the site of a well which provides pure water for the beer.

The Chimay Red is a gorgeous Dubbel ale that displays the technical perfection that has come to be expected in Trappist brewing. True to style and free from distracting flaws, you know that when you’re enjoying the Chimay Red Dubbel you’re tasting the beer the way it should be.

Its gorgeous coppery colour and creamy head give the first indication of the richness of the beer. Aromas and flavours of fruity apricot, figs, and cloves are balanced by a nice hoppiness. Its rich malty body and creamy carbonation are punctuated by a finish that has a refreshing feel and a long lingering Belgian spice. Beautiful.

Brewery Info

You can always rely on monks to made a great beer, and those at Chimay are no exception. Brewing since 1862, they use fresh water from abbey land and a natural top-fermentation process followed by refermentation in the bottle.

The Chimay beer produced today uses a unique yeast strain selected by Father Theodore in 1948 - giving the beer its own special character and aroma. Our particular favourite is Chimay Blue, which can be aged like a fine wine thanks to its classic bottle-conditioning. Like all Trappist beer, the majority of revenue goes to support charitable projects - what a great use of brewing.

Quiet night in, drank half a dozen bottles of this and woke up with a return ticket to Wales and a membership to Plaid Cymru. I’ve never been to Wales before. Or been on a mega bus, so every cloud...

Balanced and perfect paired with cheese

A wonderful beer, light and slightly fruity but it ends with a nice dry finish and crispness that works incredibly well whilst eating cheese.

Yes I know, cheese should always be paired with port and occasionally red wine but it also goes very well with a slightly fruity and dry dubbel too!

Give it a go, it tastes amazing on its own or with a beer snack or three!

I love this beer even more than the Blue Chimay. It's slightly lighter and less sweet but is beautifully balanced and tastes amazing.

Chimay are pure class. Even though this isn't as good as the white or blue ones it still easily gets a five-star rating as a near perfect dubbel type beer.
