Wheat Beer
From Weissbier to Witbier to American Wheat Beer
Brewed (obviously!) using large amounts of wheat and barley, wheat beers come in several forms. Among the most prominent are the German weissbier/hefeweizen and Belgian witbier. Weissbier is a top-fermented beer famous for its notes of banana and clove while the daintier witbier has lower carbonation and notable orange-citrus and spice flavours.
Truthfully, while there's no reason not to drink it anytime you'd want, there is no better beer for a beautiful sunny day than a wheat beer. With their refreshing carbonation and bright notes of fruit, it's easy to think of a wheat beer as being summer in a glass. The Germans do it right with the Erdinger and Schneider-Weiss ranges, while breweries like Mikkeller, Thornbridge, and Goose Island are making their own fresh takes on these classic styles.
