Russian Imperial Stout

Historically, the English stout gained much popularity with the Russian Imperial Court yet, due to the length of the voyage, its quality deteriorated by the time it got there. By increasing the hop-levels and brewing to a high gravity the product could last the voyage. What remained was an intensely flavoured, strong, dark ale. The Russian Imperial Stout has variations with the American style being more bitterness and finishing hops whilst the English style has more malt complexity. Whichever the version, expect a very full-bodied beer with lots of chocolate, coffee, dried dark fruits. The Russian Imperial Stout is a perfect candidate for cellaring and will display port-like qualities with age.
