Lager and Hybrid Beers
Known worldwide, Lager represents 90% of the global beer production, but do you really know it? Let us tell you a bit more about this beloved yet often underestimated style.
What is a Lager beer?
In a few words: Lager is a light, blonde, and low-alcohol beer with an alcohol by volume (ABV) ranging between 4% and 5%. It is brewed using a bottom fermentation process, which sets it apart from its counterpart, Ale. This cool fermentation protects against fungi and bacteria, allowing Lager to be stored for extended periods. The main yeast used in its production is saccharomyces pastorianus.
As the term Lager is generic, we can distinguish them based on the beer's color: pale lager, amber lager, and dark lager. Its taste often reveals floral notes and a mild bitterness, making it an enjoyable beer style for any occasion.
The History of Lager
It was first created in the 15th century and has its origins in the heart of Bavaria, Germany, particularly in the Bavarian Alps, due to the favorable weather conditions in the region. The Bavarian brewing regulation law required this type of beer to be brewed between the months of April and September. Brewers would then store them in caves during the winter, hence the German term "lagern," which means "to store."
Lager beers became widespread and incredibly popular thanks to two men: Gabriel Sedlmayr, master brewer of the Spaten Brewery, and his Austrian friend, Anton Dreher. Through their experiments, they managed to brew Lager scientifically and precisely.
Soon after, with industrial advancements and the expansion of artificial refrigeration, brewers could use low-temperature fermentation throughout the year. Since then, many Lager-derived styles have emerged, such as Pilsner, Bock, and Festbier. Today lager beer is one of the most appreciated beer style in the UK.
