Estonia doesn’t have a long and illustrious brewing tradition unlike the European beer heavyweights. Historically, people would brew beer at home as a form of water purification before commercial breweries took off and centralised beer to just 2 or 3 breweries. Then, craft beer happened. Tired of the lack of options, and the tastelessness of that which was available, Estonian homebrewers gained the confidence to stand up and be counted, setting up their own breweries to compete with the established breweries. Põhjala were first out of the gates in 2011 and they helped establish the Estonian’s reputation for big flavourful brews, never compromising on taste or quality of ingredients. Estonian crafter beer has been going from strength to strength ever since, with breweries popping up almost every week and the quality of beer ever rising.
