The oldest brewery in the world, brewing started at the Weihenstephan monastery in what would become Germany in 1040. It hasn’t been entirely continuous however - between 1085 and 1463 the monastery burned down no fewer than 4 times and was decimated by plague, earthquake or famine on a further 3 occasions.
With typical Benedictine perseverance, the monks rebuilt Weihenstephan each time and continued brewing beer. It now boasts state of the art technology and sets the benchmark for Bavarian wheat ale. Well, they’ve had almost a thousand years to perfect it!
