Brewery Van Eecke, also known as the Golden Lion Brewery, was founded in 1862 in the Poperinge region of Belgium. Beer had been brewed on the site for centuries, but in the upheaval of the French Revolution the original owners fled to England and it was up to a local farmer to take over the old brewhouse. As the saying went, ‘revolt all you want but we still need beer’. T
he Van Eeke family acquired the brewery and created the beer for which it became famous. Poperinge Hommel Bier is unusually hoppy for a Belgian beer but then, Poperinge is a big hop-growing region. Hommel Bier has won their hop festival so many times it’s become synonymous with the region itself.
