First mentioned in 1405, Schlenkerla Brewery is located in old Bamberg, in the German region of Franconia. Wonderfully medieval, the half-timbered brewhouse is located directly below Bamberg cathedral, and has a famous Gothic ceiling known as the Dominikanerklause.
The name Schlenkerla is synonymous with the house itself and the beer it produces - traditional Rauchbier or smoked beer. Often compared to smoked meat, the unique flavour is actually imparted by exposing the malt to the intense, aromatic smoke of burning beech-wood logs. Although something of an acquired taste, Schlenkerla is considered the finest Rauchbier brewer in the world - they’ve just won a gold medal at the 2015 Australian Beer Awards.
