Founded in 1856, De Halve Maan is the last family brouwerij (brewhouse) in central Bruges, using a site that dates back to the mid 16th century. After decades of lager and even soft drink production, Halve Maan beer as we know it was first brewed in the 1970’s and 80’s as interest in traditional beer styles was on the increase.
Veronique, the 5th generation to run the brewery, created a new high alcohol blonde ale that became known as ‘Straffe Hendrik Tripel’. Xavier, the 6th generation, then launched the lower alcohol Brugse Zot, and these two beers form the core of Halve Maan’s range to this day.
