FIVE OF THE BEST NEW BEERS THIS WEEK

We've some pretty hefty beers in this week? Highlights include the return of a great AleSmith beer (yep, the Nut Brown Ale), plus delights from Mike Hess, Thornbridge, plus amazing cans from Verdant and And Union

Verdant / Pulp / 8%
The DIPA (a double IPA) is a thing. These extra strong IPAs are full of hop flavours, with a warming alcohol taste. Although a new brewery, Verdant are known for the fruitiness of their beer. Pulp! has it in abundancen (they guys describe it: "Think pulped peppery mango flesh drenched in candied grapefruit juice with a hint of dank"), but there's a dry finish that makes it easy drinking.

Thornbridge / Valravn / 8.8%
This is a fantastic imperial black IPA from the master brewers at Thornbridge. It is the 'imperial' (read: stronger) version of Wild Raven. There's a thick malt body complemented by lively New Zealand

Thornbridge / Valravn / 8.8%
This is a fantastic imperial black IPA from the master brewers at Thornbridge. It is the 'imperial' (read: stronger) version of Wild Raven. There's a thick malt body complemented by lively New Zealand and American hops that come to the fore and make it very drinkable despite its strength.

Mike Hess / Solis Occasus IPA / 7.5%
The Solis Occasus range of IPAs, each with different hop combinations and malt blends. However, it’s always 7.5%, always hop forward with some displaying fruit and citrus characteristics, while others may be earthier or offer up more pine notes. Either way, it’s always delicious.

And Union / Unfiltered Lager / 5%
Partnering with small Bavarian breweries, the South Africa-based And Union produces classic craft beer styles. An industrial brewery could simply not make a lager like this. Unfiltered, unpasteurized and bursting with flavor, it has great body and freshness. Hazy to the eye and full on the palate it has a soft, round mouthfeel and a biscuity malt character.

AleSmith / Nut Brown Ale / 5%
We’re very excited to have AleSmith Brewing Company at Beer Hawk. They’ve won dozens of serious awards in the 20 years they have been brewing out of San Diego, not least of all being rated the best brewery in the world by RateBeer. And it is beers like this Nut Brown Ale that wins a loyal fan base. A brown ale may seem like a hard sell, but when you taste this sparkling version from AleSmith, winter’s evenings will be dominated by these beers. The nuttiness is reminiscent of creme de marrons, with an undertone of coffee, while a subtle hop hit balances it all out.
