We've listed our top 10 essential things you need to know about Oktoberfest, whether you're booking a flight to Germany or planning your own Oktoberfest party at home, this will help you get into the Oktoberfest spirit!

10 Essential Things you need to Know about Oktoberfest

1. What does Oktoberfest mean?

Oktoberfest which in German means, ‘October Festival’ (who’d have thought!) is an annual event where the drinking of great beer is celebrated.

2. When is it?

Oktoberfest actually starts late September, Septemberfest just didn’t have quite the same ring to it. Seriously though, traditionally the festival always ends on the first Sunday of October and with the popularity of the event increasing, organisers have extended the dates going forwards, to accommodate more visitors but to also take advantage of the weather, hence why it starts a good two weeks before October.

3. How old is it?

209 years old this year! The very first festival started on the 2 October 1810 and was hosted by the Bavarian royal family in celebration of the marriage of Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese. Nice!

Earlier that year there was a revolution in Buenos Aires, Napoleon was French Emperor and Beethoven composed his famous piano piece “Fur Elise”.

4. Where is Oktoberfest held?

Munich, Germany and in an area known as “Theresienwiese”, the locals call it “Festwiese”. The area is a public park which for half the year is taken up with setting up of the massive beer tents, fairground rides around June time.

5. How and why is it celebrated?

It originally started as a wedding celebration and traditionally ended with a horse race, today there are beer tents, food, fairground rides and although over 6 million people visit Munich to celebrate, Oktoberfest is celebrated in one form or another all over the world. Fun fact, more than 7.5 million litres of beer are consumed each year, oh and if it isn't from Munich, it isn’t Oktoberfest!

6. Who celebrates Oktoberfest?

The festival isn’t about guzzling a gazillion beers, it’s a celebration that caters for everybody. Open from 10 am for non-alcoholic beers and snacks, 12 pm - 10:30 pm for beers with specific beer tents open till 1 am. There are sales and food stands, sideshows and attractions. There are even family days which offer reduced prices on admission and attractions.

7. How much are tickets to Oktoberfest?

Admission to the festival itself has always been free, you purchase reservations from each of the bar tents individually whose prices vary from 10 - 40 Euros if you plan on having food too. Attractions and rides vary from around 5 - 10 Euros.

8. How big is a stein?

BIG. A traditional German-style beer stein holds 1 litre of beer for anyone wanting to celebrate at home we have a range of styles and sizes if a litre of beer is a little much for a night in front of the television.

9. How much beer is consumed?

Last year a record-breaking 7.5 million litres of beer were served during the festivities. That's the equivalent of 3 Olympic sized swimming pools!

10. What Oktoberfest Beers are there?

The beers that are served at Oktoberfest are called Marzen. Nice fact, these beers were made in March, hence the name Marzen (March in German)!

There are only a small number of breweries that are allowed to serve their beer at the Oktoberfest in Munich; luckily, you don’t have to be in Munich to taste these special beers!
