Anchor Steam Beer

Anchor Steam Beer

£2.49
Details
Anchor Brewing has played a significant role in San Francisco's history and their unique beers are all produced in one of the most traditional and handsome breweries in the USA - each brew made from an all-malt mash in their handcrafted copper brew house.
Style Lager and Hybrid Beers
Country American Beers
ABV 4.80%
Serving Temp 6 to 8°C
Bottle Size 355ml

Anchor Steam is the classic of American brewing which can be traced back to the Gold Rush era. It gets tts name comes from the 19th century nickname, “Steam,” for beer brewed on the US West Coast before the advent of proper refrigeration.

The Anchor Steam beer has a clear copper-amber colour and a thick creamy head. A malty palate with a balancing hop bitterness leads to a medium-light body and a bit of chewiness thanks to the malts. Anchor Steam is not intended to overwhelm the drinker with adjectives; rather, it’s just a solid, easily drinkable beer.

Product Reviews

  • Smooth and very drinkable

    Review by James

Great flavour and tastes like a true American craft beer.
Such a shame you can buy them readily here in supermarkets. (Posted on 13/06/2017)

  • San Francisco in a bottle

    Review by Daniel

Discovered this cracking beer while on holiday in States a while back. It's in my top 3 US beers with Sam Adams Boston Lager and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Nice and smooth to drink at a decent strength. (Posted on 12/05/2017)

  • Better than the Liberty in my opinion

    Review by Dead Derek

Definitely preferred this to their Liberty ale, was much more memorable in terms of flavour. Could be drunk all night. (Posted on 16/03/2017)

  • Good

    Review by Hugo

Enjoyable and simple beer that is easy to like, but not too complex or special. More like a 3.5 stars for me. (Posted on 03/03/2017)

  • American standard

    Review by Beer baron

Now, this beer isn't anything special, but it's still nice. Quite fizzy, a little boozy and nice on the tongue. Probably too gassy for a session beer but great with food. (Posted on 11/10/2016)

  • Pleasant but nothing special

    Review by Baz the Barn

my first beer sampled from Beer Hawk, very pleasant refreshing beer but nothing special (Posted on 30/09/2016)

  • Smooth yet bitter..

    Review by Asscrack

Silky smooth but a bitter aftertaste. May improve after several bottles I suspect. (Posted on 29/08/2016)

  • Fantastic

    Review by Vauban

I love this brewery - and the city it's in. And I think this beer is still their best. Crisp but complex - and super refreshing. What a west coast ale should be like! (Posted on 10/08/2016)

  • A Taste of California

    Review by JonWirral

This golden ale has a slight fizz a beautifully mellow hoppy flavour. I first had this on arriving in San Francisco and it is such a distinctive flavour I'm transported back there whenever I taste it. 5* (Posted on 09/08/2016)

  • Quality

    Review by Sennerd

I was hopeful but not convinced but this beer is pure joy! It is my favourite. Shows enough strength of taste but enough restraint. Definitely working wonders when chilled but will have to wait for winter to know how it tastes when warm. (Posted on 20/04/2016)

  • My all time favourite

I discovered this in San Francisco and was just blown away by it. So glad I've got somewhere to get hold of it in the UK now. (Posted on 10/03/2016)

  • A delicious American craft beer

    Review by Kaz

One of my favourite beers, it's light, refreshing and easy to drink. It's hoppy, but not overpoweringly so. Overall a nice mellow flavour to savour! (Posted on 21/02/2016)

  • Class Is Permanent

    Review by Seanp1916

We all love to explore the great beers that Beer Hawk has to offer and the American Craft selection is amongst the best available anywhere. It doesn’t matter how many different beers you try you will always return to a classic like Anchor Steam. A brilliantly smooth beer with a caramel after tone that is light enough to stack high and drink plenty! This get the 5 Star rating from me and would definitely not look out of place in the Hall Of Fame beside Samuel Adams and Brooklyn Lager. (Posted on 01/12/2015)

  • Its OK

    Review by Kloob

Not as much flavour or smoothness as I'd hoped and a little too bitter but still a nice beer. (Posted on 06/11/2015)

  • One of the best session beers out there

    Review by Cresp

Anchor Steam beer is a fantastic session beer that has a malty and burnt caramel taste and with a low AVB of 4.8 it is a beer you can drink a lot of in one sitting. (Posted on 23/09/2015)

  • A west cost classic

    Review by Geofff

Lovely bitterness for an American number - can\'t get enough after many years of steamin\' these (Posted on 16/09/2015)

  • Light and smooth

    Review by Ryans

A beer I was fortunate to discover on draught in it\'s native San Francisco. The bottle variety seems slightly darker but still has the distinctive taste of this classic beer. Somewhere between a lager and a pale ale. (Posted on 12/09/2015)

  • Lovely, unique beer

    Review by Nimonic

This is rapidly becoming one of my favorite beers. The taste and mouth feel are fantastic! (Posted on 26/07/2015)

  • Superb session beer

    Review by Joncon

I was brought up to believe that American beer was a poor relation but this just goes to show my dad wasn't always right.
Hoppy with a hint of sharpness this is best drunk well chilled on a warm day when it's refreshing qualities can be best appreciated. (Posted on 19/05/2015)

  • Smooth amber beer

    Review by len from leyton

Great malty taste. I had my doubts about an american beer but was so surprised at the superb quality and taste I found.
a real session beer to be enjoyed at a social gathering .
creamy and mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (Posted on 08/02/2015)

  • Exceptionally drinkable

    Review by Tom

Had a week of beer-food pairing sour, smoked, Trappist (and a few other styles) and this was one an American Craft beer.
In this particular instance, I enjoyed this one casually on its own. Difficult to explain, i found it simply a superb all round drink. A lager not too light, subtle fruitiness and not too dark. Nice hoppy presence and bitterness but not overly so making it very drinkable. Smooth light tasty drink! What more could you ask for in a beer? (Posted on 08/02/2015)

  • Steamy Steamy

    Review by Gavin

Yet again a lovely beer from Anchor. Nice and refreshing and no horrible after taste. Highly recommended! (Posted on 06/02/2015)

  • The only real American

    Review by Jack Swans

Steam beer is the only style originated in the US. Anchor reinvented the style to fight the awful march of the tasteless.
They succeeded in creating a fine uber lager of unique style. Everyone should drink this just to make a statement, and because it is jolly good. (Posted on 23/01/2015)

  • nice clean beer

    Review by dodge

looking at other reviews I perhaps didn't get the best out of this beer as I drank it on a cold winters day but still pleasant (Posted on 23/01/2015)
