Williams Bros. Fraoch Ale

Williams Bros. Fraoch Ale

The original craft beer! Williams Bros. Fraoch Heather Ale is brewed according to a 4,000-year-old recipe. Made with heather and bogmyrtle, the taste is light with flavours of heather, herbs, spice, and perhaps peat coming through. Florals and berries come through on the nose. Finishing clean and smooth, this speciality ale is at once exotic and familiar. Give it a go!

William Bros started off as a home brew shop in Glasgow and were ticking along quite happily until 1988 when one day a lady wandered in with a recipe. The recipe was in Gaelic for leann fraoch (heather ale) and had been handed down through the generations, but she didn't know how to brew it.  The two got together and after a period of experimentation the first William Bros beer was born!

Lovely spicy aroma will be nicer in the summer than a cold January evening and I look forward to drinking it again later in the year (Posted on 31/01/2016)

Aroma has notes of flowers, mild spice, slight wood, a touch of sweet caramel, and a hint of fruits. Taste is balanced with caramel, bread, floral, touch of spice and wood, and almost flower petals at the en (Posted on 31/01/2016)

  3. Something a little different Review by Robin

If you\'re looking for something a little different from your typical ales and beers then look no further. Whilst the beer itself doesn\'t quite have the body of many of the other ales I\'ve purchased from beerhawk the floral and herbal flavours are more pronounced than initially expected and result in a very refreshing drink that lends itself well to a warm summers day. Not sure that I buy into the 4000 year old recipe but this is a good beer one way or another probably not to everyone’s taste but certainly to mine. (Posted on 08/12/2015)

  5. It\'s ... different. Review by interzen

Floral, light, spicy, herbal - all words that could be used to describe this, since it uses heather, bog myrtle and ginger. Hops are there too, but you\'d be hard put to notice based on taste alone.

Floral notes aside, there\'s not really a lot else there - it\'s light, almost watery and although I imagine it\'d be quite refreshing on a stupidly hot summer day, we don\'t have many of those.

Not bad, but not really my thing either. (Posted on 29/08/2015)

A lovely beer for a summer evening , just a hint of floral bouquet that doesnt mask the hoppy flavour of this beer. (Posted on 19/06/2015)

If this really is the beer they were brewing 4000 years ago I would be more than happy to jump back in time. The floral and herb notes make this a great drink which I think will be perfectly suited to sitting in the garden on a sunny summers day, just need a sunny summers day now! (Posted on 27/04/2015)

  10. Tour de Force Review by Ady Gray

The oldest beer style still brewed today. This is quite simply magnificent. Floral, spicy, light. With its spice and herb style you could almost convince yourself you're drinking a medicinal herbal concoction. Then again, beer is medicinal. Isn't it...? (Posted on 27/02/2015)

  11. A floral delight Review by tehhaz

Based on an ancient recipe, Williams Brothers have pulled off a delightful beer. The heather gives it a light, floral note which enhances the flavour without overpowering it in any way at all. (Posted on 22/02/2015)
